I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.
In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”
And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

I reviewed the muddled mess that is Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN. Beautifully lit but poorly framed, exquisitely costumed but burdened by shaky CGI, and above all, a defanged and sentimentalized adaptation of Shelley's novel.

GDT's Frankenstein was nice enough, save for the constant distraction of panning, zooming, and dolly tracking through EVERY SCENE. Was the cinematographer afraid the audience might get bored if they allowed a scene to breathe with a static shot?

We rarely post news stories, but this is a significant and impactful story from @alexreisner.bsky.social @ the atlantic, detailing just how Common Crawl is scraping the internet for AI companies and accepting takedown requests but doing nothing: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
The Nonprofit Doing the AI Industry’s Dirty Work
Common Crawl claims to provide a public benefit, but it lies to publishers about its activities.

It's still entirely bonkers to me how article processing charges can run into the thousands of dollars.

This compounds with, of course, the art theft that these programs are built on, and the environmental impact of generative AI. Our talks aren’t made better with it 😞

I realize that many scientists are not confident in their art skills. Simple drawings made by scientists who may not be artistically talented are significantly better than the ai art because **the ai stuff is full of errors**. “Bad” but correct figures are better than “prettier” wrong ones.

The amount of AI generated art in slides at this conference, primarily used by older scientists, is killing me. Scientists please. Don’t use these ai platforms to make your figures or slides. They look bad and I have yet to see them meaningfully improve the message of talks.

Commission for @oceandrea.bsky.social!
Nicole was a dream to work with on my recent illustration commission (the second thumbnail)! I can't recommend her enough if you're looking for an affordable character portrait.
I’m still struggling over here and hoping to get that follow up interview for the job I recently interviewed for. And now I find out my SNAP benefits may be gone next month due to the shutdown. So anything helps at this time!
Shares are appreciated!🖤
