On this Oscar Sunday, here's my pick as the undersung hero of the nominees. It was well-crafted, affecting, and packed a helluva punch.
I wrote about why the most important Oscar nominee is the movie about how living under authoritarian rule can feel surprisingly normal.

“We really have very little eyes on what's going on. Congress has no ability to really intervene and monitor what's happening because these aren't really accountable public officials. So this feels like a hostile takeover of the machinery of governments by the richest man in the world.”

I love my city. I miss my city.
Border czar Tom Homan is on CNN complaining that Chicago is “very well educated” and people “know their rights” too well for ICE to be able to enforce mass deportations. Good work, neighbors.

My inner Chicagoan often razzes my SoCal community for not being able to tolerate the cold. But I just saw the local HS swim team finish up their OUTDOOR practice. It's 39F right now. Holy crap.

#OscarsProject Just finished watching 'The Brutalist'. How TF do you give a Best Editing nomination for a film that's over THREE AND A HALF HOURS LONG?? Cinematography? Sure. Score? Yes. But EDITING? Oh, oh no.

Infuriating, but not surprising.

At least half of the weddings I've performed have been for non cis-het couples, and I'll continue to do join couples in matrimony, regardless of whatever comes out of this horseshit.

I know the NYT has some issues (pun intended), but this interactive map actually made me feel better about where I live. It's still getting populated, so keep it marked (2020/2016 version in the comments):

I'm still deep in my feelings about <gestures broadly>, but as I start to emerge from my personal Swamp of Sadness, be prepped to hear me squawk a LOT about Ranked Choice Voting (assuming we'll still have more free and fair elections 🥴 ). The two-party system created this. Let's end it.
Excellent opinion peice on the benefits of ranked choice voting in Alaska. Key takeaways: it promotes collaboration and effectiveness in government, it requires candidates to consider all voters so it's much more representative of the people.

Okay, feelin' like 2010 with this post, but it's got that "new social media platform" vibe, sooo ... what are your favorite movies that most folks haven't heard of?
I can't choose! But these three routinely pop up.

I think it’s very important for Republican women to know that Pete Hegseth’s accuser is a married mom and a highly respected Republican aide, who went to the police immediately after the assault. They still don’t believe her. Your fascism will not save you from their misogyny.

I need to embrace this space a bit more intentionally. While the idea of quitting socials entirely is compelling, I recognize that there's still a need for reasonable discourse. And memes. This place needs more memes.
