Abstract When Prince Philip died on 9th April 2021 aged 99, the media coverage was extensive. Not only did the BBC dedicate wall-to-wall coverage to his passing (and received nearly 110,000 complaints from viewers for it), but social media, too, participated in what had quickly become a major media event. Social media remembrance has become an expected part of the death of a celebrity or well-known figure. However, what stood out in the Twitter activity, in particular, was not only sombre remembrance but also many instances of what can be considered bad-taste humour. Particularly prominent were comparisons of Philip to zombies, often including images of him. We explore the ways in which Twitter reactions to Prince Philip's death may highlight the monarchy as an outdated, presumably useless (yet undying) institution. The use of the zombie metaphor complicates the reading of these Tweets are merely offensive, as they are used to articulate resistance to royal power. We thus argue that the use of zombie metaphors in instances of bad taste, while considered offensive, may at the same time also offer a critique of the royal family as an institution at a particular moment in time and offer reflections on the ethics of researching controversial social media content.

I know folks love to pretend that 10 year wait for indefinite leave to remain doesn’t already exist, but it does and folks like me get stuck on it due to our time as students in this country.

And I can tell you from experience, a 20 year wait is fucking indefensible.

From hashtags such as #Hustling to #QuietQuitting, paid labour is a hotly discussed topic on social media. This paper explores key hashtags on Instagram and TikTok exploring gendered representations of paid labour. Social media is a key space in which young people explore the meaning of work beyond traditional spheres such as politics or trade union activism, and social media is recognized (and perhaps feared) as such. In the current fourth wave of feminism, mediations of work often take on a gendered dimension, such as in the supposedly empowered girlboss (Tran 2022). Under post feminism, this often took the form of ‘having it all’, where women seemingly effortlessly combined full-time work with being a wife and mother. In the popular feminist media environment, we see this myth continued in the #Girlboss and the #CorporateQueen but also encounter disillusionment with the impossibilities of these demands in hashtags such as #LazyGirlJobs. Analysing discourses of work in the context of post feminism and popular feminism, the paper explores the role work plays in constructions of contemporary femininity.

I remember getting an NF leaflet through the door in Bath as a student (some 20 years ago) and being informed that the government was going to build around 15 cities the size of Brimingham just for migrants. I still welcome that utopia if it ever comes.

The fuck is unfunded hobbyist research? My hobbies are millions of miles removed from the academy and if my research was of no interest to others, this would show in every aspect of my career. We have the REF for this, no? So what other than right wing talking points being echoed is this adding?
