Today is International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day and right now a bill in the Oregon legislature, HB 2410, seeks to carve out exceptions to our nuclear safeguards for select nuclear reactor projects.
Tomorrow, April 26, marks 39 years since the Chernobyl disaster.

10 weeks ago, the containment shelter at Chernobyl was the target of a drone attack, which left a 500ft wide hole in the outer dome.

Right now, HB 2410 seeks to carve out exceptions to Oregon's nuclear safeguards.

At this moment in 1986 (1:23:45am local time, April 26), the poorly-designed Chernobyl Unit 4 nuclear reactor in Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded and partially melted down during an unapproved, poorly-conceived safety experiment, releasing at least 378,000,000 curies of dangerous radionuclides.

The shift from how things looked going into this week, to how things look today. Still a *lot* of work to do, but every one of these bills that gets knocked down is a win.*

*This does not discount the possibility of a legal resurrection for any of these bills via archaic loopholes.

You can use this link to find your Oregon rep & senator. Contact them & tell them to NOT support any pro-nuclear bill - HB 2410 (the bill in this thread), nor any other like HB 2038, or SB 656.

There can be no loopholes on safety, democracy, or the environment.

Oregon law states that in order for a site certificate to be granted for a nuclear reactor plant in Oregon, two things must happen.

First, there must be a permanent, licensed, storage repository for the high-level radioactive waste.

It is a crazy world out there, but if you want to do something to make the world a little bit better jump into our zoom tonight to help keep nuclear reactors out of Oregon. It is a *low* pressure meeting: You can jump in, suggest ideas, volunteer actions, or if you want you can just watch & listen.
