I can’t believe we need staff to spell out for councillors that more consultations for shelters is not the best path to opening them.

But councillors don’t actually care about “more consultation,” they just want to delay or make the project unviable/cancelled.
"It's been my experience that talking to community members about whether they want or don't want a shelter has not proven to be the best path to getting these essential programs open as quickly as possible," says Shelters General Manager Gord Tanner.

Like Yonge street *is* kind of dystopian, but not for the reasons she making it out to be.

It’s dystopian to pile all these people to live on top of a 7 lane road spewing pollution so they can subsidize the rest of the low rise “stable neighborhoods” who refuse to accommodate more residents.

*If* Toronto had radically upzoned the entire city to towers in one fell swoop this would make sense, but what this criticism represents is entrenched classism that wants to keep renters segregated to giant towers near highways and arterials. This is about accessible neighbourhoods for all.
"We know about diversity. We know about the need for housing. We know about all of those things," says Carroll. "We're just saying, we have to proceed at a certain pace, so our community can have faith as we go there."

Councillor Bravo notes a letter from the feds saying they could face consequences for not approving sixplexes, including a potential 25% cut to federal housing funds.

Staff confirm that reduction could put several affordable housing projects at risk.

Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.
re the previous repost: if they can disappear permanent residents they can disappear citizens

Not the first person to make this observation, but it's so striking how the media covered the crack epidemic as a problem caused by black/urban drug users and the fentanyl epidemic as a problem imposed externally on white/rural drug users.

He is so stunningly, uniquely terrible at posting that it immediately stands out even in an offline context like this. The absolute worst to ever do it. In a category by himself. Singularly anti-talented in a way we will talk about for decades if not centuries. The Wayne Gretzky of bad posting.

It’s ALREADY unaffordable and a large part of that is sfh owners paying a PITTANCE in property tax for the services they use
"You like charging people taxes. You like taxing people. You're a taxer! You want to make this an unaffordable city, Gord. Grow up," says Councillor Vince Crisanti, as Nunziata cuts off his microphone.

I'm still upset. The next time that someone asks you why Toronto can't "be like Paris, 6-8 storeys everywhere," remind them that we had a proposal for mid-rises on a pretty small amount of land and councillors lost their heads and started ranting about 50-storey towers. That's why.
"We are the loneliest city in Canada. Why is that? Well, what kind of city will it be when most of our development in our major corridors is 50-storey towers where people don't know their neighbours?" says Councillor Lily Cheng.

The way this council talks about apartment dwellers is so gd dehumanizing. My building has holiday parties and summer BBQs and book clubs and movie clubs. It’s the most “in community” I’ve ever felt.
