This year I think I did my best-ever turkey: a 17lb bird, and my second turkey in our new convection oven. 2.5hrs and it was perfect, getting up to 180 on the thigh and 205 on the breast. 48hr brine.

This is also the first damn year I did not take pictures, and I'm kicking myself, now.

Just saw an AI video of Cliff Burton, aged to 62. No, no, no, no, no. So. Much. NO.

Saw this at the cash register of my local grocery store. Regardless of your politics, the idea that the government’s now making it harder for you to get exact change at the store isn’t something you can ignore or blame on Biden & DEI.

More people voted for this in the election than any other choice

Lying in bed and hearing the same droning sound repeat. I Googled "Mt Hood fog horns," and there are none. Finally... I realized it's my dumb washing machine on rinse-cycle. I miss Karl & SF's foghorns.

Watching the latest Ken Burns, and hoping all those praising American Revolution recognize how brilliantly he captured much of what Nikole Hannah-Jones was ripped apart for laying bare in 1619.

Most of my favorite albums seem to have come out in both 1988 and 1989, but 1990 was the year I turned 16. The Good Son, by Nick Cave, is probably tied with Heaven & Las Vegas by The Cocteau Twins. Still a favorite. Live, Mr Cave is still amazing.

Trying to read an AI generated transcript feels like Max Headroom is trying to talk to me through plaintext. I'd prefer actual Max Headroom, thanks.

Artists Television Access (ATA) is one of the last surviving vestiges of the SF creative community I moved to, fresh out of high school. It's gotta survive—please—now more than ever, we need experimental time-based art to thrive.

A major contributing factor to the current insanity is that technology just got too good. Devices solid and long-lasting. High-speed internet widely, if not universally, available. The whole cloud thing. A 60" TV costs a dollar.

Really made it clear how our problems are not technology problems.

what a country we got here
NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.

The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:
US Army Tells Soldiers to Go to German Food Bank, Then Deletes It
The initial 'Shutdown Guidance' for the US Army Garrison Bavaria included instructions to go to German food banks.

"Culture" is about as valid a reason for layoffs, as "My dog ate it" is for not turning in one's homework. Yet nobody questions these bozos.

It's easy and self-soothing to talk about how ignorant some people are. The real question is how to change the balance of power, which is possible, but requires behavior change.

Facts don't change habits or beliefs. Assuming they don't and won't opens the question to "What will?"
"Knowledge is power" is a thought-terminating cliché.

Power is power. And it often grants the ability to make knowledge irrelevant.

HOLY SHIT, I can now (supposedly?) get Instacart where I live!! And, there's a Japanese supermarket on my eligible locales (over an hour from my house). Dang. My future paychecks better beware—and yes, I will tip mightily.

Free of any/all pain, in my left arm & shoulder, for probably the first time in many years. It's an amaaaazing feeling. In 2012, I was told there was nothing that could be done for the remaining damage from a major accident from 2002. My greatest takeaway: I shoulda gotten a second opinion.
