Dark Sword-grass moth (Agrotis ipsilon). An immigrant species in the UK. A distinctive identification feature is the single narrow black triangle (or dart) that points away from the kidney-shaped mark and towards two other black darts facing in the opposite direction.

The Dotted Border shed escapee has been located and photographed. He's been set free and is now enjoying his freedom. However, I hope he stays out of tonight's trap. Speaking of which, Wogan will not be around tomorrow because I potted a micro that was on the trap earlier.

White-shouldered House Moth (Endrosis sarcritella). I found it flying indoors on Sunday (16th Feb) night. We get a few of them every year, but this was the earliest record we have seen. #TeamMoth

A day late to #throwbackThursday so enjoy a little end of the week cuteness from this incredibly cuddly Helena gum moth, Austrocaligula helena.

The incredible, snuggleable softness that is the forelegs, head, thorax and wings of a male Helena gum moth. The male's legs are covered in russet rings of fur, giving the impression of voluminous striped trousers as they grip the back of my hand. He appears to be hiding his face in their fluff, presenting the world with a view of his magnificent white monobrow and feathery antenna (the antenna shape indicate a male moth, feathery to detect female pheromones). The thorax is downy with russet hairs, fading to pale pink and light brown on the wings. The hindwings in the background each have a spectacular eyespot, bright orange, ringed with black and a white highlight.
