Anthony (bsky.app/profile/aspe...) wrote a great series of posts on M. hagenii tonight. I have come across something out of the M. hagenii complex tonight - on an unusual substrate: charred … something … wood? It was growing as initial colonizer on the remains of a large fire in a limestone quarry.

Heterodermia galactophylla - Branching Fringe Lichen
Semi-new-to-me.
I've seen this before while assuming it was H. speciosa, and a person with me who sampled a few branches had to tell me what we had encountered retroactively.
This time I'm not stealing his ID ;)

High up on our mountain, waves crash against the rock and send spray flying across the harsh high altitude landscape. This #lichen is represented close up in one of my earlier posts taken from up here on Kapukatoumahaka. It really does look like waves breaking on cliffs #FungiFriends

Sometimes you have to 'get down' to appreciate #lichens! Examining Peltigera didactyla on rabbit-grazed turf with participants in my lichen workshop for @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social this past weekend. Grateful for lovely feedback from all who took part, and looking forward to working with SWT again!

there would be some special cases to work out, like doing special case tiles on corners, getting information for offscreen rays (and surfaces around corners!).

but there's a lot of potential for /very/ distorted surfaces to be used in organic tunnels, arches, etc.

I've got Pacific Northwest wildflowers for you today, from my camping trip earlier this week on the Olympic Peninsula.

First up is Pacific Starflower, which was practically blanketing the forest floor in some places.

I believe these are the "red needle-like crystals" with forming norstictic acid in KOH. #lichen #microchemistry I have not found reference images for this though maybe @aspenecology.com can share his thoughts on this?

The lichen sample was K+ yellow slowly turning (brick)red.

Fun fact, lichens are the lifeform that first brought the term symbiosis into biological context

Freckled Tube Lichen - Hypogymnia krogiae
Since clones are the talk of the science community this week, here's a lichen with abundant pycnidia, the little black dots. Unlike spores which come from the apothecia, spores from pycnidia are asexually produced and don't increase genetic diversity.
