my main takeaway after spending the afternoon at the national history day competition is that the kids are pretty alright. also, that reactionaries are right to fear the consequences of kids learning the truth.

Hello from National History Day's Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn 👋🏼

We need your help to power National History Day. We will host our 2025 National Contest regardless, but we need private funding now more than ever in the face of cuts to NEH. Can you help? ➡️ nhd.org/donate

My students and I have participated in the History Day program for 5 years. Like the OP said, this program fosters civic engagement, a love of history, *and* a love of America.

Fortunately, there are state programs. CT’s state contest is on May 3rd—and we need volunteer judges!

Did National History Day in school, loved it, went on to do a history undergrad degree and then go into librarianship. What a huge loss.
I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

Having a paper go to the state championship competition for History Day is one of the things that made me realize there might be a future for me in writing about history.

It’s no exaggeration to say that this program planted a seed that eventually made me a history major. It’ll be a huge loss.

I had the privilege to volunteer as a History Day judge last year in Chicago for middle school research projects. The way these students presented their work with such enthusiasm, creativity and curiosity … we have to find ways to keep that alive. We will.

National History Day! This amazing k-12 program (and his amazing writing coach that loved mixing writing and history) put my kid on the history and academia path. He is now 21 and in History PhD program and this is exactly what they want to put an end to.

😭 This is such a cool program. I went to state 3 times as a kid and Nationals twice. NHD is definitely how I ended up with 3 degrees in history. It was life changing.
