I write, teach, move about Latin America & the Caribbean. CARIBBEAN INHOSPITALITY, https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/caribbean-inhospitality/9781978838291/
Pinned
My book, Caribbean Inhospitality, considers what Caribbean literature, film, and digital culture can tell us sovereignty and belonging, especially in our current global crisis. I start with the Caribbean’s violent origins as a place of hospitality to strangers and look to the present.

I spoke to Mahmood Mamdani about his new book, his expulsion from Uganda, his son Zohran, and *that* NYT article.
Mahmood Mamdani on Zohran, Uganda and forced expulsion: ‘Who is part of the nation and who is not?’
After being expelled from his homeland in 1972, the academic has grappled with questions of political belonging – a major theme of his son’s mayoral campaign

They can't spell "April"?

"The termination emails were riddled with mistakes — with employees’ names, the month of April and even the institute’s title misspelled in places — a telling sign of the rushed and haphazard nature of the operation..."

D.C. employees of the institute, founded and funded by Congress, received late-night termination notices, though most of its overseas staff were left in place.

Thanks goodness the corruption of DEI is behind us, and we can create a new, golden age of merit:
Rubio and Hegseth have installed this twenty-something DOGE affiliate, Nate Cavanaugh, as acting president of the U.S. Institute of Peace, per filing.

Before DOGE took control of USIP, the duly appointed president was George Moose, a career diplomat who first joined the foreign service in 1967.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

These people are clearly not up for the job.
American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social. theatln.tc/AmsjsuT6

California too, D supermajority. The CSU system recently announced staff & faculty layoffs *and* simultaneous "investment in AI" on campuses, which shows callous disregard for both students and instructors
This is unfortunately spot on. It’s not Trump who is proposing draconian budget cuts to The University of Connecticut that will decimate the university system and eliminate graduate programs, raise tuition, and increase class size, but our Democratic governor and Dem controlled state legislature.
The most immediate problem for the professoriate right now is that its vision of the university has no political advocates. Democrats really don't care about anything but universities as job training centers, and are proposing massive budget cuts at the state level dailybruin.com/2025/03/13/u...

Appearing in English for the first time, Jean-Claude Fignolé’s novel "Quiet Dawn" tells an enthralling story of Haiti’s transition from French colony to independent Black republic. Read the intro by Kaiama L. Glover & @soccerpolitics.bsky.social for free now:

We’re busy working with old definitions of authoritarian forms that are continually evolving and shapeshifting. I’m uncertain why this being a coup is still a question.
I have to give it him. Given my knowledge of Latin American history, I couldn’t fathom how he’d gain control of the military, as is traditionally done, to mobilize a coup. Nope. He knew there’d be too many levels to clear. So he used computer/digital technology.

This is good advice.

I've found that I'm much happier if I treat social media like I treat caffeine -- and for the same reasons

1. None of either when I first wake up

2. Stop consuming both after about 2pm so I can calm my nervous system enough to get ready for bed
I read a post elsewhere that advised, for the sake our our mental health, to treat current 24-hr news cycle like we did in the pre-social media—where we came home from work/school and only watched the news at 6 pm and 10 pm instead of scrolling all day. And I think I’m going to adopt that stance.
