RIP Jeff Hannusch, who spent the 1980s talking to musicians in New Orleans who'd changed the world in the 1940s-60s, and left us books that are still essential to understanding their stories.

I get dunking on this, but: she’s been the highest profile supporter of C Murder, who’s desperate for a review of a non-unanimous jury verdict that’s keeping him locked up. Maybe passing the bar helps her advocate for him.

RIP Guitar Lightnin Lee. Son of the 9th Ward, student of Boogie Bill Webb, survivor of a shipwreck with Rockie Charles, hater of pizza, lover of good times, one of a kind.

I have a few quibbles here, but glad LRB is reviewing this, and looking forward to reading the book.

Bernie Cook at Georgetown has done valuable scholarship on Katrina and steered attention and resources to New Orleans since shortly after the flood. Glad he’s still at it.
Today I participated in a wonderful symposium at my university reflecting on New Orleans culture and community 20 years after Katrina. It was great to hear from some creative, brilliant, & committed New Orleanians who are dedicated to their city.

Monk deserves this and more, happy the City did it. But curious why this corner and not one closer to his house, especially because Valence and Magnolia is also closely associated with Birdman and BG, who grew up on that block.

I wrote a lil history of the Dixie Taverne, a home base for New Orleans' metal and punk scenes before Katrina, and, decades earlier, for Latin music and modern jazz. Especially pleased to include this photo of King Louie Bankston and Broadway Joe by Gary LoVerde. acloserwalknola.com/places/dixie...
Dixie Taverne - New Orleans Music Map

Predominantly white New Orleans unwilling to go to a once predominantly Black, currently gentrifying part of town to oppose authoritarianism
100% agree but it is very funny how some Uptown people are having their own rally in Audubon because they have "safety concerns" about the greenway or think it's too far
