these people are intentionally provoking a reaction, and they're for sure going to get a really bad one soon. the idea that you storm into a daycare and do this is appalling and an intense provocation.

mamdani is not necessarily reflective of the national electorate, but his views and perspective on NYC are fairly typical for under-40-year-old new yorkers. part of being a coalitional leader is managing a coalition and there's no evidence that was done here
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

the only relevant national take about the NYC mayoral election is the one that isn't happening: how outrageous it is that the president is using federal funds as a tool to influence the outcome

Cuomo disgraced all Italian-Americans. Mamdani honored them in his closing.

i have spent a hugely disproportionate amount of time since game 7 ended thinking about game 7 and that world series in general. that has to be an all-time devastating two consecutive games for a fanbase to endure

an excellent essay. not sure i agree with every conclusion -- the leap from madden to fanduel feels *slightly* like a stretch -- but this is a tough issue that should force lots of people to consider their positions on this a decade ago: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/28/o...

great reporting, and very infuriating: i partially studied under choices curriculum in HS and had a teacher (a remarkable, remarkable man) who contributed to its development. it really pushed me. this makes me very sad

how is it possible that any hit has a bigger negative cWPA than the mazerowski home run? this is rhetorical, as i understand the math/logic, but the answer for the yankees is the literal walk off home run they surrendered in game 7 of the world series
Going by cWPA lost, "worst moments" in all 30 franchises history!

this is instructive: the online feedback loop has convinced people, even well-meaning folks, that sneering cynicism, emotional detachment from politics, and/or seeming more radical than others is the same thing as "intelligence" or "empathy"
so many people talk like this now! you can be a 600-follower NEET shitposting from your aunt’s guest room or an actual journalist at the NYT and our flattened online reality turns everyone’s engagement style into this general sneer. it fucking sucks!
the fact that his post doesn't say we should repeal obamacare actually makes it worse. it just sneers at people who have enjoyed a major policy success without having the stones to argue they shouldn't

Not trying to add to the pile on, but this way of understanding politics is totally mysterious to me. What is the appropriate amount of emotion to dedicate to any given issue and how do we know when that threshold has been met or exceeded.

i too am glad about judge's "moment" last night, and while i don't think we need to lie about his postseasons, we also don't need to lie in the other direction. he also did this in a pretty big spot last year:

there is a lot to say about the politics or wisdom of RAD conversions, but all of it misses the point that these buildings are falling apart, they're dangerous to everyone, and NYC needs to do something about it: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/n...

it's honestly pretty disturbing to log on here at 8:30 am to post about the yankees and see 500 people just religiously watching pete hegseth scream at generals. you don't need to do that!

"we" do for sure -- despite his pretty comprehensive capture of the MLB narrative most seasons. don't forget: he posted a career-low K% this season as well.
Aaron Judge just posted a 215 OPS+.

That's his third time topping 200. (Only 4 AL/NL hitters ever with more.)

It's the 4th-best righty batter season ever. It gives him two of the top four, and three of the top eight. stathead.com/tiny/0SA1J

Sometimes i feel like we underrate him somehow?

reminder that you cannot spell aaron judge without “cal raleigh had a nice season but still isn’t the AL MVP”
September 27, 2025 at 5:24 PM
aaron judge is the obvious AL MVP and frankly it’s not even a debate. that said, it’s not some outrage if raleigh wins. he’s having an incredible, all-time, historic season, but still the second-most valuable in the AL. sorry! but it’s true

I wrote an essay about two dead men. One is Charlie Kirk, and the President will threaten you for anything short of worshipping his ideas.

The other is Bill Hampton, a man neither knew but both would love you to forget.

“When was Joe Biden president?” remains the most difficult question in politics
Who was the president in 2018 when you lost your show?

Who was the president in 2023 when you got your new show?

this is not only correct, but crucially, also in keeping with the spirit of the nation's founding. early american history is filled with this sort of activity, and it's the actual point of the "a republic, if you can keep it" line everyone loves
South Korean protest culture is one of the country's huge strengths and it relies in part upon having large networks of people who can be mobilized at short notice. The U.S. is at nowhere near this stage of organization but it badly needs to be.
