At the HOA Conference on Trade & Connectivity w 🇦🇫, I spoke on barriers to regional connectivity and trade.

I made five points

1. restrictions on the movement of people and goods between 🇵🇰 and 🇦🇫 are problematic because they violate the spirit what Adil Najam frames as “Pakistaniat”.

Humanitarian aid is a relatively small portion of total Overseas Development Assistance (ODA).

In 2023, 🇺🇸 spent $66 billion on ODA. $17 billion of this was 🇺🇦 alone. Another $20 billion or more was for MDBs and UN agencies. For example, US contribution to WFP in 2023 alone was $3 billion.

This is a wild story not because of what it is about but because of what it isn’t about.

Managing employee “presence” is a legitimate ops function that is part of what “managers” do.

The real story here is how lazy the management class has become & how corrupt tech & tech procurement is.

The last word on the South Korea martial law. It lasted about six hours.
This entire thing was just a farce from start to finish. He also said he will cancel it but it will take a little more time. That is because it is late at night and the number of people needed weren't around to formally lift it. (I'm paraphrasing, but that emphasizes how ridiculous it all is.)

Important perspective on South Korea. University students in that country don’t go away quietly. Protests will ensue for sure. Will be interesting to see how the military deals with that dynamic.
Prepare for MASSIVE protests. I'd venture the coming protests will outdo those that saw Park Geun-Hye removed from power. One thing about Koreans: they will absolutely not be cowed. They've overthrown dictatorship and removed a president from power, all with largely peaceful protests.

Amazingly, despite the epic chaos and instability wreaked upon global and local establishments, blanket bans on social media and blanket governance system upheaval have been relatively rare.

Do martial law in 🇰🇷 & social media ban for kids in 🇦🇺 point to much more to come elsewhere?

There are speechwriters in other countries that are using Google Translate right now—en masse.

"Through this martial law, we will rebuild and protect the free [insert your republic here], which is falling into the abyss of national ruin"
More detail on what Yoon is saying here (in Korean). May be errors in the translation but it sounds pretty, er, full-throated.

There is a reason that both prison breaks and prisoner releases are staples of terrorist resurgences. In 2021 and 2022 Pakistan authorities willingly let hundreds of TTP terrorists out of jail as part of its negotiations w the terror group (whilst also getting hit w multiple attacks at jails).
