mine is the mitford-hitler baby
Haven't figured out what should replace Polybius as my "one conspiracy theory that I know is BS but believe anyway." My interim has been "the Lindbergh baby is still out there" but I'm gonna need to come up with smth slightly less absurd before the impending centennial of that kidnapping.

For “barely legal type” read “not legal”
Of course there's a difference, and it's reflected in many state laws.

But . . . that isn't the point. Middle-aged men coercing sexually mature but underage girls into sex is still illegal, exploitative, and vile. "But they weren't 8-year-olds!" is a really weird thing to say.
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

good episode! as often happens there's a lot of good stuff even for people who don't know the material. speaking for myself (to my shame) i'm not even sure if i've ever really realised that the "proud mary" song and the "fortunate son" were in fact by the same band.
The new episode of A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs is now up! Racial slurs! Tolkien! West Coast jazz! Dancing pigs! Lawsuits! So many lawsuits! It can only be the story of Creedence Clearwater Revival and "Proud Mary".

This episode, we look at the song “Proud Mary” and the brief but productive career of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Click the full post to read liner notes, links to more information, a…

but was the sandwich rocket propelled?
Defense begins, “This case, ladies and gentlemen, is about a sandwich. A sandwich that according to Agent Lairmore somehow both exploded on his chest in a spray of mustard and onions but also landed intact on the ground still in its Subway wrapper.”

listen we may have lost our family business, made our kids miserable, had to live in a barn with goats and lost $50,000 to a local Russian slumlord, but at least we dont have to see gay people in public

Now everything’s cool; the beast’s part of the band;
my monster mash is now the hit of the land;
but the witches’ curse means the living can’t hear it;
you’ll have to be happy with this rather different tribute.

none of us are safe unless all of us are safe and none of us have rights unless all of us have rights!!!!!
One of my fave photos from today.

Loved that the folks leading the chants were regularly including trans rights.

WHEN TRANS RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK, WHAT DO WE DO?

STAND UP FIGHT BACK!

A fallacy that I see some organizers promote [sometimes] is that people 'just know what to do' and this is simply not true. Tell people what you are doing and invite them to join in.

BCOS RSNS will be performing on December 13, supporting our friends the Memepunks and Rome Burns; at Nambucca! This is a very special gig (a) because i'll be able to walk home and (b) because we'd lost Nambucca! It's even in the Buffalo Bar video, shuttered.

tories now strayed so far from their roots they can't have big long lunches at westminster eateries with people they kind of hate where they all get incredibly drunk.

so I’m listening to some Tolkien podcast and one of the guys is talking about his digital Tolkien text search and annotations database and he notes they’re not able to provide actual text or searches… @steuard.bsky.social I’ve had an idea.

see the thing is, this is true.

but also: I remember saying, five years ago, that I think people would find it hard to accept automated driving even if it were statistically safer than human driving, because the types of errors it did make would be incomprehensible & thus horrifying.

so: fuck.
here's an important thing about deterministic tools: when they fail, they fail predictably

you can learn how to use them *for your own purposes* because they behave in consistent ways even if they aren't 100% optimal

AI tools add a layer of ambiguity so you're 100% never sure what the output means
i'm doing library instruction sessions for the first time this semester and i feel this so much! even leaving out specifically LLM-related stuff it feels like vendors and publishers have totally fucked us over wrt precision in searches and made it much harder to give clear instructions

just legislate for PR and if they daredn’t, do a referendum on adopting PR with the options as reform (adopt PR)/westminster (no change), simples.
As Dan said before I think, Labour have to start acting a bit more like they represent 40% of the left block
This bunch always seems to be high for the right-bloc (50/41?). But 34% versus everyone else at mid teens would not really be "ooh, FPTP wot are we like" territory
