Democrats caved and got nothing. As America careens into dictatorship, we don’t even have an opposition.

[Europe] must plant a flag… [Remaining] democracies are watching…wondering if…the last bastion of liberal multilateralism, will resist foreign pressure or surrender to it…whether democratic institutions can survive when the most powerful democracy in the world turns its back on them.
The EU has a secret weapon to counter Trump’s economic bullying. It’s time to use it | Johnny Ryan

A quarter of a million in Amsterdam demand the Dutch government take more serious action to allay suffering in Gaza. I wasn’t at the protest today, and my overall opinions on this conflict are quite complicated, but it’s refreshing to be in a country where a real protest culture exists.

When the “Cancel Culture” the right has moaned about for years becomes a reality… because those on the right would see fit to make it one.
People are losing jobs due to social media posts about Charlie Kirk
Some GOP officials want to clamp down on perceived expressions of schadenfreude about Charlie Kirk's death. Conservative activists are publicizing social media posts that are "celebrating" his death.

A poignant, sobering analysis. What happens when the ideals that directly underpinned the flourishing of a group are incompatible with the dominant understanding of what is required to assure the future of that group?

Trump is invoking arcane provisions of the US Code to deploy the National Guard to suppress peaceful protests against illegal and egregious behavior by ICE. This is a tremendous escalation and further evidence that Trump and his Republican enablers want nothing more than total control over discourse

What was that about Democrats wanting to rewrite history? Hegseth is a hypocrite, plain and simple.
Commentary: Hegseth's move on USNS Harvey Milk is a stain on military's 'warrior ethos'
Of course, Trump's Secretary of Defense wants the name of Harvey Milk, the murdered gay rights pioneer, stripped from a ship.

The talk is big but sums paltry for now. Europe will have to pony up billions more to pull people away from the familiarity of their homes. And this is coming from someone who is strongly considering relocating to Europe once I’m done with training.

Returning to the US after a few months abroad, the last week in the Netherlands, you’re made acutely aware of our crumbling public infrastructure, failing government services across multiple major sectors, and the absolutely insane number of police and police-adjacent personnel, leaching resources.

Trump’s AG doesn’t understand (or willfully misrepresents) the law. What a surprise!

Minimally, for an action to meet the definition of domestic terrorism under 18 U.S.C. § 2331, it would need to be dangerous to human life. Torching an overpriced car in a lot when everyone’s gone clearly isn’t.
Pam Bondi Calls Tesla Vandalism ‘Domestic Terrorism,’ Promising Consequences

Pentagon erases contributions from non-white military personnel in DEI purge. The Navajo code-talkers who were crucial to our war effort in the WW2 Pacific theater were also erased. This, from the same people who believe respect for history requires us to keep statues of Confederate traitors up.

If Trump can invoke a 1798 statute meant for use in wartime to summarily deport “suspected gang affiliates,” he can do pretty much anything.
A federal judge on Saturday ordered the Trump administration to cease use of an obscure wartime law to deport Venezuelans without a hearing, saying that any planes that had departed the U.S. with immigrants under the law needed to return.

What happens next is the beginning of the end of the American experiment.
Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.

The filibuster is one of the Democrats’ few remaining tools to check the Republican governing trifecta. Instead of using it, they’ve handed Trump carte blanche to continue dismantling our civil service with the aim of erecting a dictatorship. This is @schumer.senate.gov’s Neville Chamberlain moment.
