To get why this law is such a big deal for CA, see this insightful @mattyglesias.bsky.social bit about what yimby is & why anti-yimbyism exists…though only in places with discretionary housing review.

Exempting infill homes from CEQA changes step 3 & thereby steps 4&5.

This breakdown of what happened when Oregon legalized missing middle looks just like what I see happening from Raleigh legalizing it.
Some folks thought this would instantly transform the state. It didn't. The main change was that lots that would previously have attracted luxury oneplexes...

Literally just getting back from a trip to Arkansas and it is blowing my mind that teachers there make more than NC.
North Carolina is really letting everyone down with this.
North Carolina's average teacher salary is ranked below neighboring states, and is about $14,000 less than the national average.

This whole thing is nuts. Are they just changing the rules on what votes count after the fact?
Jefferson Griffin and the @northcarolinagop.bsky.social are trying to steal an election in North Carolina, and if their co-partisans on our state courts allow them, it won't be the last one.

Seems like rising home prices might be causing a political firestorm, but that might just be me.
There's a lot going on here, none of it good, but this part stuck out: "Others, such as overturning residential neighborhood zoning rules, are less likely to produce new housing than to spark a political firestorm that could set back liberalism for years." washingtonmonthly.com/2025/03/17/t...

We received an $80k grant from Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities Program for our e-bike rebate program. We had 1,300 applications for the initial 150 vouchers; these funds will provide 60-80 more vouchers. Demand is there. Folks want options. #ralpol 🚲

I think it is hard for people's minds to comprehend the demand to live here. The population is booming & the amount of housing you need to build to meet that demand would blow people's minds. We should still plan for it.
Wake County faces massive housing shortage, report finds

A new report reveals a severe housing shortage in North Carolina, with Wake County projected to be 110,000 homes short of demand by 2029. It could drive up house prices as demand is greater than the supply.

Good on Paper - The Political Psychology of NIMBYism
Listen to Good on Paper - The Political Psychology of NIMBYism by The Atlantic on Podcast Addict. What makes someone a NIMBY? The prevailing theory suggests that people support or reject new housing in their neighborhood based on what’s best for them personally. The political scientist David Broockman provides a different explanation—one based on people’s beliefs about important symbols such as cities or tall buildings, rather than self-interest. This rings true to me. Part of it that drives me a little crazy is when government tries
to do something, gets loud feedback to change it from people who don't want it to happen anyway. Then the public see the watered down result & think it was planned bad all along. Lose lose.
Something that has become very clear to me from working on housing and urban policy more generally is that a lot of people — including a lot of professional advocates — think that there's a way to do policymaking without any tradeoffs, and the existence of tradeoffs means you did something wrong.
increasingly obvious that a lot of people want left-wing policy but without the social democratic tax based policy for broad based funding
