This painting by William Ratcliffe depicts a quintessential scene of a Swedish cottage in winter. Inspired by his great friend, and Camden Town Group founder, Harold Gilman’s visit to Sweden in 1912, Ratcliffe began his own exploration of Scandinavia the following year.

Hendrik Mesdag's sunset (1887) looks simple: sea and the sky, which a low horizon divides into unequal parts, a few sails in the distance, on the left, enliven the rather severe construction. But look at the multiplicity of tones and the complexity of this work sinks in.
