JOIN US, PALS! After a busy winter and spring of one-off community building classes, I’m switching it up for the summer. I’m launching a seven week cohort for folks who are currently part of a community project that they’re trying to keep humming (maybe as a leader, maybe as a participant).

New at Can We Still Govern: An anonymous NIH employee maps out the GOP budget gameplan to permanently gut our most important science agency.
Impoundment, delay and red tape will create artificial "savings" that become the new benchmark for NIH budgets.

Great turnout (and day) for the #handsoff Missoula, MT rally!

A group of Missoulians, many of us strangers to one another at the start, organized a Public Lands/Land Stewards rally that an estimated 1,100 Montanans attended today. We can make a better world.

A good thing has happened! Thought we’d run out of those.
Rep. Zooey Zephyr - My Wife - just gave an incredible speech against a drag ban in Montana. It was so strong that a Republican rose to speak passionately against the bill, chastising the sponsor.

The drag ban dies in Montana, flips 10+ Republican votes!

This is the power of representation.

Trump claimed the Biden administration spent $8 million "making mice transgender." The White House tried to back up this number with records of funding for research into cancer, asthma, and HIV, some of which used *transgenic* (genetically modified) mice.
Trump Decried Millions Spent 'Making Mice Transgender.' It Was Cancer and Asthma Research
President Trump falsely claimed that Biden spent $8 million on 'making mice transgender,' but the real research was for human health.

I think if you don't want to buy things from major retailers today or any day that is great, and I would also love for everyone to remember that successful movements usually need to involve labor, and to start thinking of yourself as a worker first and a consumer second

1. Protests are happening literally every day these days. Trans rights protests. Protests against Musk. Heck, over a thousand people showed up for a protest at the Treasury.

I advise everyone, especially people who don't usually, to find any of them and just go to one.

It's important.
The Tesla Cherry Protest is over 300 strong! Way to show up South Jersey! #teslatakedown #protest

I've never seen it stated so plainly: Joyce can imagine herself as an author whose book event is disrupted by protestors so she opposes the protest.

Can you imagine yourself as a fired federal worker or deported immigrant? Wouldn't you want people to take drastic measures on your behalf?
it's true that I tend to support bookstores & book people. I know what it's like to plan for a book evening, arrange chairs, hope for a good turnout. how dismaying it must have been for many when, outside the store, protesters caused a commotion as the event began.

Revealed: NIH research grants still frozen despite lawsuits challenging Trump order
The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep a funding freeze in place, leaving researchers in limbo.

WE’RE SOOOOOO BACK WITH OUR FIRST CLINIC OF 2025 -

TUBELESS CONVERSION !

Going tubeless is a great way to avoid popping your bike tires as frequently as you might with traditional setups. But getting over the hump of actually converting can be super intimidating … UNTIL NOW!!!!

The point is to throttle access to higher education. To prevent an, “…educated proletariat”, as Reagan’s advisor said long ago
⚠️ Effective Monday 2/10/25, NIH indirect rate capped at 15%. Applies to existing & future grants.

—> Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you.

Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

I wince at people calling every single thing a distraction. Even if it is a distraction it’s still

1) a thing that is actually happening

2) a thing that is hurting people

3) a thing that also needs to be fought and illuminated

“It’s just a distraction”feels so dismissive.
Re: "distractions":

Most people I know are capable of paying attention to more than one thing at a time.

You're trying to decide for other people what they should or shouldn't focus on.

One person's distraction may be another person's health or safety.

NEW — DOGE now has full access to HHS Payment Management System, I’ve learned.

The system distributes almost $1 trillion per year in grants (largest in the govt) and supports all of NIH, CDC + many other public health initiatives. Musk guy Luke Farritor is actively delaying payments to recipients.
