yep, this is what i think is going on. there is an underlying moral economy where service jobs are feminine and thus undesirable whereas factory jobs are masculine and thus good.

one interesting thing about this is that no one on the “maybe tariffs are good” side of things has made an argument for why americans would be better off more low end manufacturing jobs versus making service jobs better paying and unionized
