Back in MY day, mid November wasn't too early to pack away your summer shorts in the Midwest USA.

This Rick Steves audiobook made my drive across Missouri so much better. He's in my top 5 favorite humans and I hope he's doing well. And I still need to get his memoir.

BREAKING: At Pope Leo XIV’s urging, U.S. Catholic bishops just delivered the strongest rebuke of a sitting president in Church history — condemning Trump-Vance raids as “inhumane” and “dehumanizing” in a 216–5 vote.
NEW: At Pope Leo’s Urging, Bishops Issue Historic Rebuke of Trump’s Raids

it’s also notable how the techbros of today really don’t read *books* anymore - this was really not the case for the Tech Guys of earlier generations, far as I’ve been able to tell

A sincere thanks to @theonion.com for spotlighting a huge and growing problem with America's broken Veterans Affairs system.

My @propublica.org colleagues have been investigating the VA and could use help from those who've worked there:

I spent 26 hours on a single task for work. I never want to hear about Greece again. On the other hand, I gave an LLM a prompt requiring 40 steps of research and analysis and it came within an INCH of getting the right answer in the end. I was expecting it to be much further off. Nuts. Tired. Balls.

Apparently there was a very dramatic and quite publicized attempt to rescue a cat from a tree in Le Mars, Iowa. Citizens and local businesses made a coordinated effort, but the cat simply went further up the tree. Volunteers looked at the cat and the nearby power line and said 'fuck it' (probably)

It's the airplane queues that made the senators cave, isn't it. Someone important had to wait in line, didn't they.

Nothing gets you hyped up for an upcoming election season quite like a dinner buffet at a midwest Pizza Ranch. By the time I hit the cactus bread I'd already submitted a form to volunteer for @robsandia.bsky.social for Iowa Governor HOORAH.

I love how slow Wikipedia moves during controversy. For YEARS after the "GamerGate" harassment campaign, editors refused to give up the URL of the *original* meaning of the word: A gamergate is a kind of ant.

Without a consensus to the contrary, the ants keep it.
