Okay, the crowd going nuts like someone just scored a touchdown at the Super Bowl all *through* the KDH performance is a hell of a thing to see hear/see:

Literally live 5 min from my parents' house, so that hit of nostalgia for a hometown is completely foreign to me.
as someone who has lived my entire life within 20 minutes of where i grew up i am charmed/fascinated by the ~normal~ american thanksgiving experience of returning to your roots, seeing family you normally don't, meeting up with old friends. it sounds so interesting and cinematic

We hope everyone flies free this weekend.

BTW, the name Elphaba is a reference to "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum.

The Batman effect: The mere sight of the 'superhero' can make us more altruistic

This makes a lot of sense.
I let that one go because one of my principles for genre fiction is “you get the premise for free.” Everything else has to make sense, everything else has to be consistent WITH the premise, there have to be rules and stakes — but I’ll just take the premise on faith even if it’s objectively goofy.

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

Just found out the company that made my favorite puffer jacket from Costco was founded by one of the pioneers of outdoor gear. He created the modern carabiner and the cord lock.

Zohran picked 「卓蘭」("excellent orchid") for his first name and「夸梅」("brilliant plum") for his middle name.

The orchid and the plum are among "The Four Noble Ones" in traditional Chinese art, the former symbolizing an indifference to fame and fortune, the latter an indomitable, incorruptible spirit.

I love these conversations because I also get to learn new things. Meet the Red and White Giant Squirrel of China!

A very stupid part of our health care system is having to pick out a plan based on how much care I expect to need the next year. My family is young and healthy, but that can change!

My wife's and my open enrollment don't overlap at all either, so it's difficult to compare too.
