A spark of bright news. Now to keep this one from getting overturned.
A federal judge on Thursday blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a contentious executive order ending birthright citizenship.

Birthright citizenship has its origins in English common law & was enshrined in the U.S. Constitution through the 14th Amendment.

Publication day for my 4-part series on the barriers patients face when trying to access - and get insurance coverage for - eating disorders treatment.

Kudos to Rob Waters and Diana Hembree of MindSite News and to the Pulitzer Center for the support!

Whenever I had a discussion with a climate denier I'd send them to websites at NOAA, NASA, DOA, among others that had evidence based data to explainthe forces of a disturbed planet. Day 10: DOA instructed to scrub their website of Climate Change Facts. Watch the news... NOAA and NASA will be next.

If you’re like me, you’re desperately searching for bright spots in this ever-darkening picture. I found one here: Leonard Peltier is going home. Yes, it should have happened umpteen times before. Yes, way way too little (should be a pardon) and almost too late. But yay. amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/01/...
Leonard Peltier: Biden commutes sentence of Indigenous activist convicted in 1975 killings of FBI agents | CNN
In one of his last acts before leaving office, former President Joe Biden commuted the life sentence of Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents.

This is a HUGE case that will determine whether millions of Americans can still access free preventative care under the ACA. The consequences of a bad decision would literally be lethal for some patients.
BREAKING: SCOTUS takes up 3 new cases, including a challenge to PrEP and contraception coverage that led to an order from Judge Reed O’Connor, affirmed by the 5th Circuit, that would end a wide variety of preventative care coverage under the ACA.

I learned so much from this story by Jill Robinson illuminating the cultural importance of blue crab and the environmental changes hurting the fisheries. Great read!
I may not be a regular fisher person, but on my first trip to Charleston, Tia Clark inspired me to be a better steward of the coast. Check out my recent story for Sierra.

Insurance coverage for mental health and substance abuse care is under threat from all sides:
- The Trump administration and a Republican-controlled house and senate could reverse the recent hard-fought gains in enforcing the mental health parity act

Eek. Have been trying to let this outbreak fly by like all the previous H1N1 I’ve covered but this may be the time it really happens. #birdflu #h1n1 #epidemic
I just hope the lab where they’re doing this gain-of-function research has good security. Because it’s possible this mutation will happen on its own, but we don’t need to help it in any way.

Smart delve into why @laurahelmuth.bsky.social 's tenure at Scientific American was so groundbreaking from @shiplives.bsky.social: "This makes some people mad when they don’t like what the science has to say (e.g., vaccines work; climate change is real; biological sex is not binary)."

This. A public health calamity is coming and we’ve got to find every way we can to stop it.
The measles vaccine has saved 94 million lives over the past 50 years, and it plus vaccines against 13 other pathogens have cut infant mortality by 40 percent and saved 154 million lives.
