Shelters do not admit couples, families with children, people with pets, require total sobriety, and often force people to attend church services and do not accommodate people with dietary needs. Build housing people can afford on extremely low or zero income.

Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.

Chicagoans are paying about $40 apiece just for lawsuits tied to disgraced former cop Reynaldo Guevara Jr.

So far this year, the city is on the hook for some $285M in police misconduct settlements—roughly $100 per resident
really good comparison here. can someone calculate what Chicago residents are paying for CPD settlements?
Kansas City residents are paying out the equivalent of $50 each for Kansas City Police settlements just for comparisons.

Incarcerated women and trans people in the U.S. are punished for their periods. They describe:

🟣 making their own tampons out of unsanitary items

🟣 facing penalties for having more tampons or pads than allowed

🟣 being humiliated by prison staff — yes, even women

Many incarcerated women and trans people are forced to choose between maintaining their dignity and health — or facing penalties.

This is REAL. I feel like I've aged 15 years in the last 12 months. I don't feel like I'm living in my own body anymore. Injuries come out of nowhere. The temperature is forever hideously uncomfortable. Now I understand why our culture is so afraid of aging.

They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear.

The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

An evergreen connection between poetry and activism:

Big changes can start with *small* actions: that tiny choice to show up to a training, wear a button, post online, wear a whistle as a necklace, stuff that is too easy to cynically write off as performative. Every small action opens a door.

I have listened to all the episodes of Allison After Nxivm on the free feed. I listened with an open mind, holding my values that we are all more than the worst thing we've ever done.

But this podcast is emblematic of everything wrong with journalism, and how we treat survivors of abuse.
We caught up with Natalie Robehmed to talk about how the 'Allison After NXIVM' longform podcast came together, how she tracked down Lauren Salzman, and what she learned from the whole experience.

Never in my lifetime have I witnessed a politician so indignant, righteous, and combative about throwing the activists and door-knockers who got him elected under the bus. He's spent his term wooing his opponent's voting bloc while telling his own voters to kick rocks. No endgame here.
Brandon Johnson repeated this on WBEZ this week saying incredulously “there are people who want me to cut the police budget.”

I’d really love for him to reveal exactly who is asking that of him.

Because I can tell you this: a lot of people who want him to do that held their nose to vote for him.
Johnson vows to veto any budget that includes a property tax increase or makes cuts to the proposed $2.1 billion for the Chicago Police Department.

CONTEXT: No one has seriously proposed either.

Nayra Guzmán was 15 days post C-section — going to see her baby in the NICU — when she was taken to Broadview and held in custody for about 34 hours.

She slept on a bench and barely got food. She couldn't pump.

Her story is a rare window into the growing detention of pregnant & postpartum people.
Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.
