Some good news from me! At long last! (1/4)

Delighted to share that I am now working at @girtoncollege.bsky.social Library. This is pretty much #goals / #dreamjob: a beautiful library & a place with an incredible sense of community and history. Yes! Those beautiful grounds are my new digs!
Introduce yourself with 5 concerts you've seen:

-Joanna Newsom (Madrid & the Courtauld in London)
-My first Tori Amos, Glasgow circa 2004
-Silvio Rodriguez, London, one of his rare forays out of Cuba
-Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle half staged, Leeds
-My brother Oscar, any of his band(s) iterations ❤️
Introduce yourself with five concerts you've seen:
Björk (3 times)
LCD Soundsystem (twice)
Janelle Monáe
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (twice)
The Broken Family Band (many times, but specifically the last ever night at The Boatrace in Cambridge, with John Peel in the audience)

Great moments in the life of my first novel in English, The Golden Key (Titan, 2020), author's edition:

💙The Golden Key getting a cute advert on the London Tube 😮.
💙The librarians from the Modern Languages Faculty Library at Cambridge gifting me a cake on publication.

This autumn has been very good and very busy. Busy enough that this is basically just a bullet point list of updates, plus a cat pic, because who doesn’t...

The Works of Vermin, by @hironennes.bsky.social (pub by @torbooks.bsky.social) is a novel that blurs the line between genres, an imaginative proposal that gifts the reader with stuff worthy of nightmares (in the good sense).

God, how I hate what kind of society we are becoming... Btw, we can stop it, it depends on us: which kind of world we create, which kind of community we foster, which kind of cities we live in. You can help @argonautbooks.bsky.social by sharing wide and far!

A friend mentioned in WFC that I had said to him that I was ok now; thank you to that friend for pointing out that I wasn't acting as if it was. Still finding things hard, still on medication. Lots of things are better, but lots are not. It's okay to acknowledge this. It takes time. #MentalHealth

The Labour Government reeling off the same far-right talking points on immigration. And look who is celebrating. The far-right.

When people say that Wuthering Heights doesn't have anything to do with race or that no film has engaged with race, what they mean is that for them Romani people do not count and they also haven't been paying attention. I'm going to share a little material from a recent talk. Content note: racism 1/

Post you from another era.

Iceland, 2006. Pic by James Womack. We had been married for about a month. James was in Reykjavik with a "genius" grant for polyglots to learn Icelandic in a year, I stayed at Oxford, but visited.

Well, this morning I'm off to teach my Translation class at Cambridge Uni. Honestly, these students are so ace, that I am wondering, what can I actually teach them??? Inserting more weird/uncanny/female writers in their curriculum, one lesson at a time...

Bezos is worth over $400 billion, many Amazon employees require SNAP.

The people who need help are not the problem.

It’s corporate greed. It’s an unwillingness to pay a living wage.

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.
