We are rapidly approaching the point where most councils are extensive social care providers with a weird sideline in bins.

I spend a lot of time thinking about the ways in which our areas of interest/expertise effect the ways lead to very different ways of moving through and understanding the world around us. This is an excellent example.
It's so wild that there are people who can identify cars by sight. Like instead of “brown truck” or “grey sedan” everywhere they go they’re all “that Mazda Myopia is turning left beside the 2017 Chevy Stigmata”. It must be like seeing those colors only shrimp can see.

Since the very dawn of humanity, from the time we stopped being apes and started being humans, we imagine that people have looked at the heavens, seen the regular progression of the stars across the night sky, observed the movements of the planets, and asked themselves, "When is bins?"

1 don't stab yourself
2 if you're not sure whether to give an epipen or not, DO IT

Part 2 of the ‘English homelessness law is awful’ thread.
Assuming you have managed to be found by the council to be homeless, eligible, in priority need & not intentionally homeless (hard, see Part 1 bsky.app/profile/near... ), then the council will provide you with permanent accommodation, yes? 1/
I suppose, thinking about it, I should probably do a quick explainer for new followers as to just how mind-bogglingly awful English homelessness law is (different in Scotland and Wales), because few people outside the sector (unless they've been through it) really have a clue... 1/
Suitable accommodation under section 190 Housing Act 1996 - little caselaw, as TA for intentionally homeless is often only a a couple of weeks, but here a JR decision on unsuitability of B&B accommodation for household of 2 adults & 2 children with health issues nearlylegal.co.uk/2024/08/suit...

Why are sentences for violent disorder lower than those for peaceful protest?
The criminal justice system should not treat rioters less harshly than demonstrators

sometimes the EU is good, actually

death to touchscreen controls
Europe is pushing back against car touchscreens that many drivers despise -- and which are dangerously distracting.

To get a top car safety rating, cars will have to offer physical buttons/knobs, not just touchscreens.

Carmakers Must Bring Back Buttons, Says Europe - Hagerty Media
Key dashboard touchscreen functions will soon be kicked into touch and physical switches required for car makers to be granted the highest safety ratings.

Some sad news.

Dr Alan Solomon passed away last night. He was one of the pioneers of the anti-virus industry - a larger-than-life character with a brilliant mind and a great sense of fun.

Working with Alan was the happiest time of my career.
