I don't have a good answer for what the alternative looks like, but asking 18 years to bet their future on highly specified training for jobs based on which they think will be in high demand 5-10 years from now turned out to be a very bad way to structure higher education
I wrote last week about how the tech dream is ending for mid-career workers. This is a really good companion piece about how entry level tech jobs are vanishing, too, and the Silicon Valley gold rush is coming to a close: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/10/t...

If there is one lesson to draw from the history of fascism in the interwar period in Europe, it is this:

Democracy falls if and when mainstream conservatives and centrist/center-right elites decide to make common cause with extremists because they consider the “radical Left” the more acute threat.
“The New York Times collaborated with a white nationalist eugenicist hacker and agreed to keep his identity a secret to publish a Zohran Mamdani hit piece” is a way bigger story than “18 year old Zohran Mamdani ticked ‘African American’ on his Columbia application because he was a citizen of Uganda”

We are all going to have to get used to immediately checking for watermarks on all videos (like on this one, where you can see the 'Veo' logo in the bottom-right, proving it's not real). Except within a few weeks there will be a tool to remove them. Fucking hell the future is EXHAUSTING
In fairness, I have taken all of them.

Unfortunately few people have ever wanted to pay for hard news and investigations, which have always been subsidized by ads, cartoons, crosswords, Wordle, recipe apps, paid events, etc., and can mostly only be undertaken by newsrooms. Readers of indy Substacks are paying for takes
It's crazy how much independent life does not incentivize reporting. I spent 2 days working on a piece about Meta censoring the biggest Muslim news acct in India, digging into Meta's relationship w/ India's far right BJP party & I lost paid subscribers. Meaning I lost hundreds of $ doing this story
Meta bans largest Muslim news page in India
The platform is facilitating government requests to censor social media influencers and journalists in the region for 'anti-national content' following the terror attack in Kashmir.

A very succinct summation of why AI isn't going to be the thing they say it is. There's no road to there from where we are.
In other words, when you ask for example “do vaccines cause autism?” you are looking for information about whether a thing in the world (a vaccination) produces an outcome (autism). But the LLM can only answer “what words could sound right after this?”

A massive study of 50,000 households over 1,000 archaeological sites provides ample evidence that inequality is not a "natural" outgrowth of sophistication. Instead, it is a political choice. Which means, kids, that we don't have to choose it.
