Remember those times i said we were headed for an epistemic crisis because bad people were gonna use deepfakes to make propaganda & conspiracy theories & destabilize consensus reality-making & how the central paradigm of "generative AI" enables, encourages, & was indeed built on this premise?

Yeah.
This person is one hundred percent correct and it’s scary af. We will never “media literacy” our way out of this as a society. We are about to reap the whirlwind when it comes to misinformation, disinformation, and informational warfare.

Without planning on it at all, we caught part of the eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland a few days ago. Also saw some of the lava scars from last year. What an otherworldly place.

I met some puffins yesterday! They are much smaller than I expected, though just about as cute as I expected. They all had adult coloring, but many of them seemed to be rather new to adulthood :)

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.
Just some creepy armed Mad Max guys trying to gain entry to Dodgers Stadium.

ICE says it wasn’t them. DHS says they were Border Patrol. But honestly who the hell knows? They’ve given permission for any psycho to put on a ski mask, point a gun, grab people & throw them into an unmarked vehicle.

I’ve been watching all the videos out of Minneapolis and LA and at this point I’m wondering if the majority of armed dudes in masks wearing “ICE” gear are even employed by them. Like ICE should be abolished *and also* most of these guys are just claiming to be them in order to terrorize people.

Good morning! On this day when the New York Times begins its podcast series on trans healthcare for kids, I wrote an open letter to my science journalism colleagues who work against trans healthcare in the name of our shared profession: galileospendulum.org/2025/06/05/o... Please read and share.

Two LIGO sites are essential for independently validating observed gravitational wave signals. Without the second site, we can't constrain the sky position well enough for electromagnetic follow-up searches of binary neutron star mergers. This would be devastating for the whole field ...
NSF budget would close down one of LIGO's sites. This would be, to put it lightly, a catastrophe for gravitational wave astronomy.

"In FY 2026 NSF will operate only one of the two sites
and will support a reduced level for technology development."

it is quite literally not LIGO without two antennas
My people, we need two LIGO sites to prove sources are astrophysical and not, like, a rabbit hopping nearby. ⚛️

If anyone in my network knows any mathematical artists on blue sky… or artists who use math in their work on blue sky…. Can you let me know? I’d love to follow them.

(I had a bunch on Twitter but I deleted that a while ago and want to see more in my feed.)

Everyone 6 months and older is eligible to get a flu vaccine.

It makes no sense to restrict Covid vaccines to only people who have specific medical conditions.

The FDA is basing its decisions on politics, not science.

It’s even more offensive because they ASKED US FOR THIS POWER and they’re not using it! They’re shrinking away from responsibilities that they actively campaigned for! They’re spending more time trying to keep their jobs than to do their jobs!
At this point, I don’t take seriously any elected official who doesn’t throw themselves into the gears of the machine because the machine is creating fascism
If the Constitutional order is collapsing, then the people who cherish it (which should be the vast majority of us) must act like it is in crisis. Act like collapse is normal and normal becomes tyrannical.

No one likes this but it remains true that you can’t just oppose a message and expect people to pick it up; you have to actively, aggressively build an affirmative narrative for people to support in order to counter opponents. “You’re wrong” isn’t as powerful as “this is what right looks like”

I… did not know about this. This is so bizarre and unsettling.
He has talked about the Baileys for literally decades and I find it fascinating.

2007: "It was suggested to Schumer that he is a little bit weird. He acknowledged this to be true. 'They’re real for me,' he said. 'I love the Baileys.'"

I’m seriously asking myself this question. First stop is Monday in Baltimore. I just… beyond the crassness and abdication of responsibility that is doing a BOOK TOUR when an unelected billionaire is actively destroying critical government agencies, it’s notable he’s not scheduled to show up in NY.
Is he... selling out the country... to make it to his book tour on time?

between Eric Adams, Columbia, and Gillibrand and Schumer, New Yorkers are straight up not having a good time rn
The final tally to advance the CR is 62-38.

The Democrats who voted for cloture, giving Donald Trump everything he wants:

Cortez Masto (NV)
Durbin (IL)
Fetterman (PA)
Gillibrand (NY)
Hassan (NH)
Peters (MI)
Schatz (HI)
Schumer (NY)
Shaheen (NH)

I don’t want to wait nearly four years to primary Schumer. I want every moment of his existence to be a struggle, right now. I want him to feel like he can’t go out in public without being reminded how much he has hurt people. No rest. No acceptance. Same for the rest of them.
