I really hope an editor pays Lisa to write this thread up. it’s a great example of how academic work contributes to movement work. @bostonreview.bsky.social? @therumpus.net?
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

One of the most valuable takeaways from the training is that social media and spreading rumors about ICE only stokes more fear and chaos for those most impacted. The best thing you can do is if you are an eyewitness you call the hotline and you film video to be shared w PIRC directly.

Despite all the jokes about Portland being war ravaged, there are members of our community who are quite vulnerable. Let’s step up to protect them where we can. This is from one of our city councilors @counciloravalos.bsky.social

Portland people, help fend off the governor’s efforts to undermine preschool for all. You have to be a special kind of jerk to try to take away PRESCHOOL 😡
I’m sooo tired of Democrats siding with the rich over the people. Gutting Preschool for All to protect millionaires from a tiny tax is a betrayal—of working families, of our values, and of the voters who demanded this. If this isn’t worth fighting for, what is?

CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS NOW:
Tell Governor Kotek and the Legislature: Hands off Preschool for All!
There is an existential threat to Preschool for All developing in Salem, and unless we can rally enough community outrage and response, the program could be effectively killed as soon as this week. ...

Yes. Keep pushing.
Every little act in the direction of the values and world we want matters—pushing back, speaking up, checking in, advocating, slowing down, extending care, building community, summoning courage. These are scary and uncertain times but we have the capacity to create life-affirming alternatives.

The poverty rate of disabled folks is astronomical compared to abled folks. There is no doubt this disgusting discriminatory policy is part of the reason why.
