Ida Wells was born enslaved but refused to live in fear. She wielded the power of the press to expose America’s greatest terror—lynching. When the truth made her a target, she didn’t back down. She co-founded the NAACP, fought for Black women’s voting rights, and left a legacy of resistance!

As we witness these heartbreaking scenes from the fires in LA, an important reminder that incarcerated people make up over 30% of California’s forest firefighters.

/2 …to the west, iconic restaurants and buildings on Pacific Coast highway along the beach are gone. In Altadena, an American suburb like any other, regular schools and homes and business are gone. These aren’t “mountain” or “rural.” It’s next door, the place you drive by every day.

So I am to believe that Trump's top priority right now is filling low-level legal roles in his administration, AND he needed to talk to Alito specifically about this one, AND neither man said ANYTHING else in a private call of which there is no record, got it, great abcnews.go.com/US/trump-spe...

Someone pointed out they also come from Canada and sometimes other countries. Very decent.
Very thankful for the hard work of the firefighters under terrible conditions, and for the firefighters coming in now from out of state.

They evacuated Santa Monica which is not some nestled-away-in-the-mountains richie rich enclave. It's a regular ass neighborhood with regular ass people and businesses etc.

It's insane. And there's no end in sight.
People outside of LA truly don’t understand how apocalyptic this is. It’s worse than it’s ever been. Entire residential neighborhoods are burning to the ground.

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires.

As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry.

The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.

ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change.

Since the news failed do it's job, here's a short summary of the role of climate change and wildfire risk:

yeah to non-shitpost for a second, I have close friends that this has happened to and it's extremely tragic. mid-20s mental onset illness in young men is A Thing, and it's really fucking scary and sad. people who loved him are probably agonizing over if only they had done something.
seems like the shooter had some sort of mental breakdown about 6 months ago and totally vanished

This is really damning. NJ State Troopers, unhappy with a report on racial bias incidents, just stopped doing traffic enforcement, and seemingly weren’t on the roads (as evidenced by a vehicle from a fatal hit and run being abandoned for hours before anyone noticed).
For eight months, traffic enforcement citations on New Jersey’s highways plummeted by 81% compared with the year before. The unrivaled reduction is now the subject of a criminal investigation.

1/ You may have seen us talk about formaldehyde — a chemical that causes an inescapable cancer risk for everyone in America.

It’s in the air we breathe. And it’s in our homes: our couches, our clothes, even babies’ cribs.

So what can you do to reduce your exposure? THREAD 🧵
