Personal note: London has been home for a very, very long time, but as of today, I am also officially a Brit - that is to say, a British citizen. I feel relieved and I feel grateful - but not, perhaps, in the forelock-tugging way GB News/Starmer expect a new immigrant to be.

This is new information for me, too. It's wild that the person who invented the most common reading education system in the US says point-blank that it doesn't matter if people don't actually read words, but just guess what they are. He says it's fine to see the word "pony" and read it as "horse."

Like the Guardian, people view the BBC as left wing and, as a result, their combined anti trans campaigning has done more damage to trans people than the entire right wing media machine, because they legitimised the right wing's lies.

Sure, though for the past 3 decades (?) the idea of a national culture has p much been undermined by successive governments : cuts to arts funding, walling off access to creative industries to the richest in society, making the UK incredibly difficult to be a creative worker etc.
I reckon a shared national popular culture is just as important (if not more important) than a fact based, impartial news service for liberal democracy to work.

Anti-black racism 'baked' into Met, review finds.

This is 26 years after the Macpherson report which concluded that the Metropolitan Police was "institutionally racist".

Little changed.

Leaders of major political parties incite hatred. None charged.

The independent review surveyed 40 years of evidence of how racism has affected black communities and black Met Police staff.

Great Zimbabwe was the capital of the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe from about 11th century until the 15th century, and it was abandoned in the 17th century. It was about 3 sq miles long and housed about 10,000 people inside it's walls. They had trade links to Persian and China via the Swahili Coast.

Well, will you look at that completely expected piece of news.
The very same people who are so quick to blame migrants for all the ills of the world, are the ones posing more of a threat.
Watch likes of Goodwin try and explain this away and still blame migrants.

this truly is the thing that brings me real joy because this is the piece that’s replicable everywhere. if enough of us show up, their millions of dollars in dark money, bribes and attack ads accomplish nothing. Mamdani is clearly a generational talent but he won’t be the only one we find if we look
The oligarchy came out in full force against Zohran Mamdani's fight for a more affordable NYC.

It didn't matter.

Let his victory in the face of Big Money serve as a reminder that people have the power.

It's almost like maybe the ones who've been driving the fascism all along were the chattering class "centrist" elite who resented their loss of control over bourgeois propriety to the damn millennial filthy proles on Twitter, and the crass egoist kleinburger bosses who resent being judged by anyone

It's almost like... like maybe the fascism *never* actually arose from working class "economic anxiety"... like maybe the working class *weren't* actually the ones radicalised by bourgeois resentment of "cancel culture" and "wokeness"... like maybe the working class have... more pragmatic priorities
Remarkable: In Virginia and New Jersey, Spanberger and Sherrill erased the GOP edge among working class. Per exit polls, each got 50% of noncollege voters, big gains over previous contests.

Shocker: Anti-Trump politics appeals to working class, too!

This needs more attention: Zohran SPLIT the straights with Cuomo. ALL of his margin was from LGBTQ+ voters. Every Dem who ever said “we should abandon the transes” needs this shoved down their fucking throat with a ramrod.

The full weight of western capitalism is about to laser focus on NYC. The robber barons failed to win and will panic. They will sabotage NYC because the system cannot allow Mamdani's term to be successful. They cannot allow people to believe things can be better. Your job now is to hold the line.
