A common trope in post-WWII British comedy was "The Man from the Ministry". Such characters were figures of an authority that understood that certain things must be done, but was entirely disconnected from the realities how things could or should be done. There was a reason for these caricatures.

One of my - many - personality defects, is a tendency to look at individual arguments on their own merits, rather than the rightness of the cause they are advanced in favour of, considering less what people believe, and more their ability to be consistent and coherent in their defence of it.

If you go to the zoo, and visit the primate enclosure, it is quite possible that the inhabitants will express their feelings by throwing objects, including their own faeces towards you. The fact that they will continue to do so whatever you say does not constitute a requirement to respond in kind.

I'm sure that setting my .com domain registration on automatic 10 year renewal made perfect sense a decade ago. It would have been quite nice though if I'd remembered doing that _before_ the latest renewal fee hit my bank account...
