The stretch of road in front of the Forest Hill T stop has long been too congested for cars and buses and too dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. As my colleagues and the administration heard from 40 residents, we need change now.

We had an enormous turnout last night and can't thank everyone who came out enough.

Overwhelmingly the folks who use Hyde Park Ave want safety improvements! Let's make that a reality!
Next Monday, 6pm at the BTU School there will be a hearing about safety improvements on Hyde Park Ave

We're calling for folks to come early and sign up to testify to ensure we don't have another tragic injury on Hyde Park Ave!

This is the main issue I have with so much of the coverage around e-bikes. It's not that there aren't legitimate issues. But there is a panic around e-bikes and crickets regarding the daily toll of cars. And that's because the harm of cars is just accepted. It's baked into our society.
The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.

If you look at Google Street View you can see what was in place before, AND you can see multiple bikers and a standing scooter rider using the bike mobility lanes because they are kept free of illegal parking

If you don't protect the lanes nobody can use them. Or worst case, someone is killed

Once you remove the Mass Av flexposts, the bike lane is blocked and bikers are forced into traffic. Is this the outcome you were looking for @wutrain.bsky.social @jfh01.bsky.social ? 10:30 this morning (photo sent to me by a daily commuter between Pompeii & Chesterton) @mass.streetsblog.org

@jfh01.bsky.social @streets.boston.gov people hate flexposts because they are terrible at their job. We'll take them over nothing, but replacing them with something that is worse at doing its job than flexposts is not a win. Tired of this narrative that's being used to make streets even less safe.

Also! If you see a Bike Bus or Kidical Mass or bike parade and you are driving a car: please slow to a stop and put on your four ways and use your vehicle to make this safe until the last little ones come by. It'll only take a minute. Many drivers already do this and it is so so so appreciated👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

There’s a 20ft law in Boston. A few months ago I explained to Boston Chief of Streets @jfh01.bsky.social that this was not enforced and made walking with my baby constantly dangerous. He said they wouldn’t be doing anything about it as it amounted to “removing spots” and was bad politics.
We've been asking drivers nicely for decades to be better and safer, and it hasn't worked yet, but maybe if we keep it up, they'll finally change, right?

We need to just design our streets so drivers don't have a choice.
“Leave some Space” asks Seattle DOT to this car owner parked too close to intersection . Very proactive to ask drivers nicely not to endanger people walking & biking

But why not give communities tools to do it themselves. A standard design planter box with reflectors would be a better deterrent.
