Earlier this week storm hit the Dutch coastlines. This was a shot of the Oranjemolen that stands right next to the coast in Vlissingen. During storms like this you get this unreal scene that looks like a painting. I got soaking wet, but it was worth it!

Today on the blog, I have a taste of scholarly humility and try to work out who exactly the early medieval Vascones were (spoiler alert - it’s complicated). #medievalsky

Who were the Vascones?
Contrary to legend, when Charlemagne invaded the Iberian Peninsula in 778, he didn’t fight many Arabs. Instead, the Royal Frankish Annals inform us that as his armies crossed the Pyrenees, he ‘subj…

Sometimes your parchment is imperfect, but you use it anyway. This leaf has a large hole that was caused during the processing of the animal skin. Part of the hole was sewn up using thick thread, and then the scribe just wrote around it. (UPenn Ms. Codex 747) #medievalsky

I've been watching back videos from when I sailed from Dives-sur-Mer to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, following the route of the Norman invasion fleet in 1066. 130km of c. 70m chalk cliffs in a strong N/NE wind that turned into a gale just before we reached Fécamp. Similar conditions to 1066 #MedievalSky

My brother Tom is a wonderful writer and shares his work on insta at @composition_ofwritings , but I just had to share his reflection on the aftermath of Samhain. It calls to mind the quiet landscape of our childhood and he envokes a world of ghostly companions and omens. I just love it!
