THE SUMMER QUEEN (1990)
Acrylic on Panel - 36" x 24"

I was glad to learn that Joan Vinge was writing a sequel to The Snow Queen, and even more so when I got a call from Warner Books for the cover assignment. 1/7
A woman in ornate headdress and leafy yellow cloak holds out two glass vials. One is accented in black with a skull decorating the slender handle of the stopper. The other vial is decorated with a gold swirl leading to a Celtic shield knot. Her young face is covered by a mask of pointy yellow leaves with a gold and green border framing her blue eyes. A motley pattern of butterfly wings peeks out underneath; a purple butterfly is centered above her forehead. Bells hang from her ear which is covered by a single pink rose. A hint of white hair mixes with beaded necklaces covering her neck. Wild grass sweeps off the top of the mask. The tall headdress is laden with symbols. Central among them is a sun with a stylized biohazard symbol at its center.

A private commission for the book by H. Rider Haggard. 1/4
At the end of a long thin ramp of craggy rock, a woman trailing raven black hair casts a glance to the audience as she's poised with weight on her lead foot ready to launch into open air. Much of the painting is dark but a cone of light starting off-panel left highlights her lithe figure. Red background bleeds through thin skirts. The outline of her legs contrasts darkly against rippling folds. An updraft of air captured in the light around her sweeps upward to a hinted outline of mountains. Her arms are flung wide. A long veil wraps the side of her face, frames her chin, and billows out to where she holds the end loosely with the tips of her fingers. Wispy forward-arcing lines—jagged like an abstracted bolt of lightning—descend over her, curving back down to point to her lead knee.

New piece! I struggled with this one a lot back when I started it a year or two ago, but it finally came together nice and easy when I went back and took a second look at it. 😊
A minotaur with a sword sunk in his chest and several cuts on his body, but from each cut flowers and flower petals flow instead of blood. His face looks sad and pleading, and he raises a hand as if to fend off an attacker.
