Meet the artists from last week's Space/Time retreat at @covepark.bsky.social - Suzi Cunningham is a Scottish live-performance artist and Butoh dancer. Her solo work is highly physical, political and responsive to its unique environment, enriched with her sense of design and musical composition.

Earlier this month the Magnetic North Artists Network came together for a workshop run by Luke Pell from Curious Seed in Leith. It was an inspiring, invigorating day of gentle movement, collaboration and reflection - thank you to all involved!

For theatre artists and freelancers, disability welfare cuts will erode career sustainability, self-esteem and quality of life.

Text: The UK Government is planning major changes for disability welfare - the Scottish theatre industry should pay attention Image: line drawing of a wheelchair user working on a. creative project at a desk In summary: Incapacity benefits under universal credit will be frozen for existing claimants at from April 2026 - and will not be increased in line with inflation until 2029/30. Those aged under 22 will no longer be able to claim the incapacity benefit. Personal independence payments will be harder to qualify for. While these only apply to England and Wales, a proportionate figure will be cut from the Scottish government budget. The cuts will make it harder for disabled people to cover living costs, in a time where financial pressures are already difficult. Research suggests that 77% of people getting Universal Credit and health or disability payments already have to go without essentials. For disabled theatre artists and freelancers, this proposal threatens to erode career sustainability, self-esteem, and quality of life. We are proud to represent a diverse artistic community at Magnetic North, and condemn this proposal and the dangerous rhetoric it encourages. What to do next? Write to your MPs (theyworkforyou.com) stating the negative impact these cuts will have on disabled people. Find resources and support for disabled-led arts organisations - such as Birds of Paradise, Unlimited and Scottish Neurodiverse Performance Network. Meet our final SPACE/TIME artist: Katherina Radeva is a multi award winning interdisciplinary artist working across the performing arts and the visual arts. A working class and disabled woman from Burgaria, she is one half of multi award winning Two Destination Language whose work tours extensively.

Meet our next SPACE/TIME artist: Michael Lee Richardson @hrfmichael.bsky.social is a writer and filmmaker based in Glasgow. Michael’s short, My Loneliness is Killing Me – dir. Tim Courtney – won a BAFTA Scotland Award in 2018. It has been shown on BBC Scotland, and at film festivals worldwide.
