Current Math teacher, former Latin teacher; forever nerd and LGBTQ+ advocate (she/they).

Pretty much running off of spite at this point.
I suspect this is true of many fields. Most times I have considered leaving education, it is some version of this wish.
Working in games means your answer to the question "If you could do anything you wanted in life, what would it be?" isn't a different career, but the same career in a kinder version of the same industry.

Finally did more than thinking about pre-ordering @chadtopaz.bsky.social's "Unlocking Justice." Double bonus that my favorite local bookstore, @ravenbookstore.bsky.social, had it in their search. Triple bonus that it will likely be a post-birthday surprise to future-me when I get the pickup call.

I did not see them. I only ever saw a small portion of the VERY large crowd.
Coming out of the craft store with posterboard, I pass a couple going in.

Her: We're here for the same thing.

Me: See you tomorrow.

This feels like my sign to put down the phone and pick back up the pumpkins I am crocheting to give out at the GSA Halloween party.
Please believe me when I tell you:

Double the fuck down on your spiritual practice now.

You are going to need it.

And no, that doesn't have to be a prayer-god thing.

The thing that sustains and nourishes you.

That makes you more alive to yourself, the world, others.

More present.

Trip to Wonder Fair, because I earned a new blank notebook. As always, the highlight is a Dave sighting. #LFK

Intersection of years of reading Ancient Greek and learning SQL:
I can't help but read the use of ; as a statement terminator to be a question mark.

1st GSA meeting in new setting. Something said made me realize wife and I have been MARRIED longer than any of the high school students have been alive, and we had been together over a decade before that.

Then a student called us "vintage lesbians," and I have decided to embrace being "vintage."

Wife: I spent so much time in airports today that I started a book in one and finished it on the plane here. I think you'll like it--"Automatic Noodle" by @annaleen.bsky.social

Me: Guess what I bought this week...

Just finished the first full week with students, and I realized that I didn't cry at all and only once doubted my ability to keep this up for the whole year. I don't remember the last time I could say that about a new school year.

15yo is reading "The Odyssey" in his English class, @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social's translation.

Wife informed him that I have opinions about translations. Surprising nobody, he has not asked me for them.

In my early teens, my dad gave me permission to read anything from his collection (very extensive sci-fi, plus a range of nonfiction and academic books). By late high school, he valued my opinion on what I read and automatically passed along fantasy novels he received.
I especially don't think parents should be monitoring what fifteen year olds read in fine grained detail.

I think they should have conversations with their kids about appropriate reading material, and maybe read some of the same books and talk to them about it.
