You think LLM-based chatbots can help students learn? Think again.

Take a few minutes to listen to Dr. @drtanksley.bsky.social clear explanation why this is very bad, harmful idea, especially for Black students.

Me too, except it is all being burned down without me having to do anything. Can't we just shut off the internet so all university work is done in a secure Intranet? Surely, we can stop this?
Finally got to the "I want to burn it all down" portion of the gen AI-era semester, where I realize they're all using some sort of LLM to "help" organize their thoughts and it's just spitting out raw sewage onto the screen.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I ban AI use for all commencing research students but I am fighting a losing battle to even restrict its use in my degree classes. The problem is that students are using it regardless of my guidelines. It feels like a tidal wave that is unstoppable atm. Drowning not waving...
cannot believe on some level I & my colleagues have turned the tide on this, but also it was in some senses inevitable as why not! Humans can do anything; we still have a way to go however of course, but:

banning AI in the classroom should be as uncontroversial as banning calculators in early maths
“I already ban the use of generative AI in my own courses, and as a promoter of master’s theses. I explicitly tell my students they won’t learn anything by using it. [...] A general ban is necessary, but nobody dares to say so.”

yeah, look .... not sure who needs to hear this (actually, everyone does), but turn off the stupid AI suggestions in your search results, and def. go and use @wikipedia.org a lot more.

I use it as my first-go-to knowledge base resource.

Follow the trail of citations to primary sources.

It's good.
wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...
