Follow me at your own peril. I might just block you.

By reading the past, I see the future.

Survived the Camp Fire and Helene. So, I'm maybe ahead of you... for now. But don't worry, you'll catch up!

Today is the 7th anniversary of the Camp Fire.

We lost everything. It’s no exaggeration to say that I nearly died that day.

My wife and I always have a hard time figuring out how to mark this day. It’s not a happy anniversary.

Well, Alexander ended the Persian Empire. Fucker.

So we skip 1,000 years ahead (Fuck them Romans) to the Golden Age of Islam.

Mister isn't impressed. 🤷

“Another question is how much higher mortgage rates would be on 50-year loans. Rates would have to be higher for lenders and investors to accept the risk.”

Higher interest AND longer term?

Sounds like a GREAT deal... for lenders. Home owners; not so much.

www.newsweek.com/50-year-mort...
50-year mortgage rate would add about 86% more interest over life of loans
Experts warn that a 50-year mortgage would end up costing American borrowers much more in interests than a 30-year standard loan.

You may be wondering where your next meal is coming from or whether you'll be able to afford health insurance next year.

Meanwhile...

I mean, we all knew that the Democrats would eventually cave when the shutdown first started, right?

Right???
November 10, 2025 at 1:37 AM
Whispers, "It was always the only answer."
Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.
November 10, 2025 at 1:39 AM
When - not if - Democrats cave, the shutdown *will* be their fault - because they let all this pain happen for nothing.

I'm watching a history of the Persian Empire, circa 400 BCE, and wealth inequality and mortgage crises were headlines even then.

There's nothing new under the sun. 🤷

And yes, like all empires, the Persian Empire fell... due to that asshole, Alexander the "Great."

We would make terrible Republicans because we feel a duty to make sure people have food.

Aside from donating monthly to World Central Kitchen, Feeding America, MANNA Food Bank, and Meals on Wheels, we just bought a basketful of pasta at our local co-op for their SNAP food drive.

So, we’ve decided we’re just going to stay home, order a pizza, have a nice bottle of wine, and talk about all the work we have done over the past 7 years to go from nothing to where we are.

No one helped us get here. We’ve had to fight for everything we now have.

We deserve to celebrate that.

Anyway, we’ve been talking about it for several weeks.

Do we go out and have a nice meal? It’s a cold and busy Saturday, and we really don’t do indoor dining much since the pandemic.

Do something fun? Like what?? It’s a day that doesn’t really scream “fun!”

But that’s not true for the vast majority of our fellow Paradisians. Many became permanently homeless. Many more - like us - moved far away. Some rebuilt, but not like before.

“Recovery” is a very misleading word. What happens is something, but it isn’t “recovery.”

What “Recovery” Really Looks Like
The Camp Fire was five and a half years ago. Has Paradise “recovered”? And what does “recovery” look like?

But, we have done well. As I sometimes say, “We’re one percenters”: the very few people who managed - through a *lot* of hard work - to build a new life. We have a good life now, and I give thanks every single day for that.

It’s been a long, long road to “recovery”, and seven years in, it still isn’t over.

The “system” isn’t designed to help you “recover,” “rebuild,” “start over,” or whatever misnomer you want to use.

The System Isn’t Designed to Help You
After the Camp Fire I came to realize that the system (banks, insurance, everything) isn’t designed to help climate victims.

The Republicans control:
The Senate
The House
The Executive

The Democrats are powerless. And yet Democrats are to blame for the shutdown.
