Hi! Are you on Medicaid and were you essentially turned away from the ER by being told that it isn't clear that you care would be covered due to Medicaid portal issues? Email me at jmetraux@motherjones.com

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt gets multiple questions about whether Trump’s federal aid freeze impacts Medicaid, which provides health insurance to ~72 million in the U.S.

She’s unsure, says she will check on that “and get back to you.”

Look, whether or not this — probably, though I am not a lawyer, unlawful — “pause” applies to Medicaid or not, it is conspicuous, unsurprising, and NEWSWORTHY that the memo explicitly stipulates that it “should not be construed to impact” Medicare or Social Security but Medicaid goes unmentioned.
There is some ambiguity about whether this “pause” means that no Medicaid or CHIP payments can go out for 2 weeks. Hearing different interpretations from different budget experts.
Hoping for some clarity on this

Huge huge news— Tim Kaine just passed one of the big pediatric cancer research bills, Jennifer Wexton’s Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, by unanimous consent!

It already passed in the House so it will become law with the President’s signature! This is so great!!!

With a number of cancers that still don't have reliable early detection tools, exciting to see Congress come together to prioritize a pathway to coverage of innovation in multi-cancer early detection. Willing Congress to finish the job and pass the year-end CR in short order!
Thrilled to see language based on the #MCEDAct included in text of the year-end health care package!

This bill creates a pathway for access to early detection for people with Medicare—which is critical because the risk of cancer increases with age.

We urge swift passage. bit.ly/3ZZCIQe

So important to watch out for.

They’ve learned trying a full repeal is too unpopular, so they’ll try to sneak it through in massive funding cuts.

Stay focused!

This this this! Healthy parents (with lower medical debt and more household income) mean healthy kids and families!
Our new georgetownccf.bsky.social brief explains why the ACA Medicaid expansion for adults also benefits children.

Proponents of deep cuts to Medicaid are targeting expansion with claims of protecting kids.

This is not correct. I’ll explain why:

The 5 states with the largest number of dual Medicare-Medicaid beneficiaries are:
California 1.565 million
New York 986K
Florida 928K
Texas 747K
Pennsylvania 485K

If a cap is imposed on Medicaid these Medicare beneficiaries are in trouble. And with an aging population states are at huge risk.

Andrew was an incredible advocate and wonderful person. It was heartbreaking 💔
A bit more on this, from my book American Prophets: Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly-gay Episcopal bishop, officiated McBride's wedding.

He referenced the experience while preaching Sunday at the National Cathedral, saying, "I couldn't admire (McBride) more as a human and as a child of God."

Medicaid is health insurance but it's also economic security. Medicaid means less medical debt, higher household incomes, and the effects go on. To be here in 2024 reading about plans to cut Medicaid after an "economic" election is fundamentally disorienting. Opponents of Medicaid are out of touch.
Census Health Inclusive Poverty Measure incorporates insurance into poverty measurement. 2 things jumped out to me from this measure
1) The Marketplaces bring 1.8 million people out of poverty
2) Poverty is even more concentrated in states that didn't expand Medicaid

Bryce’s reporting is consistently excellent. These stories are heartbreaking 💔
Between April 2023 and August 2024, more than 24.8 million people were kicked off Medicaid. Some of them were no longer eligible. But in an eye-watering 70% of cases, there was no explanation.

Medicaid is the reason that my amazing disabled daughter is able to live at home with her family instead of being institutionalized in a medical facility. This is personal; it's what got me involved in health care advocacy in 2017 and it's what I will be focused on in 2025.

For those new to Bluesky I post mostly about Medicaid which is at dire risk of draconian cuts in 2025. There's consensus among GOP leaders in Congress & conservative groups to radically cut Medicaid & Trump himself tried (and failed) to do it in 2017. #healthpolicy ccf.georgetown.edu/2024/08/14/p...
