Harsh Words Spoken Harsh words spoken to me are a locked door. Harsh words I wish to reply are locked in. My red face will not let them on the floor. Turns the lock within, silences the din. A child locked out when mum and dad argue. Crane your ears to hear the cuts and slashes, wound yourself as get too close to the feud, and wet your bed and shame embarrasses. You keep the steel trap door shut and shutdown any further outbursts, lock it all in and further in, dig deep grave deeper down, bury others on top so it can't spin out of the hole, release the others too. Scream out of your head till you're black and blue.

Saturday Exile c.2002 I am a phantasm. Haunting the doorstep, binliner of my life cushioning head. Ben Sherman shirts aren’t made for alfresco sleeping— cotton is cold at 2am. The Other Side of Truth Some of them don’t look like doors at all. Take wallets and bank accounts for instance; neither you nor I can see over those walls. We take it on trust what’s on the other side. There’s always something there, something you can rely on; call it truth. But this truth is only ever half of the story, even if it is real. One day you find the key or the ladder to that treasury of wealth, usually money. Your illusionist milks the audience, pulls back the curtain, to reveal nothing. A blank, a void. Inside   The door was closed before I came. I think. Or maybe not. I don’t remember.  I wanted rest, so didn’t argue when they said I’d hurt someone. Maybe that someone was me? I said I didn’t. I didn’t mean it. That’s the same. Isn’t it?    The walls are pretty jigsaws. Sometimes I talk to them. Sometimes they answer. Sometimes they purr when I think too loud.    I think too loud. I know. I try to stop. But thoughts keep pulsing. Don’t wait their turn.  They crowd the room. They press against the door. Flake the tangerine paint Into fragments on the floor.   I pace the floor, check the door is locked. I check it every hour. Count the ticks to make sure. The clock rasps through hours.   The door holds its silence. It’s keeping something out. Or in.  I’m not quite sure which one I am today. It won’t tell.   They said I’d be okay here. It would be safer.  They meant from me. Or maybe not.  I wish I knew. I wish I knew the rules.    I wish the door would open.  Not wide. Just a sliver. Just enough to release the pressure and let the air remind me what is real.  But not too much. I’m not ready for too much.  Not yet.

Poem Threshold The massive door has always been locked until now it stands slightly open like parted lips whispering yes. You imagine a turquoise sky, peach sorbet clouds— the opposite of this grey-shrouded world. You touch the weathered wood dotted with knotted eyes, wonder how far eternity is-- how wide? How deep? But there is the latch, undone, there is the handle, so, you inhale, exhale, and pull-- a sea-salt breath brushes your skin as you step over the sill. No more doors. No more locks. This is where your life begins.
