Chapter 6: Almost perfect

Beatrice's caught in a rollercoaster of emotions at work: Stress, self-doubt, anger and uncertainty. Until Ava enters the scene. Ava manages to ground her. But, as the tension eases, a different kind of thrill hits her just as hard.

“So...” Ava talks first and nervously rocks her body back and forth.

“Well, as I was saying, I can’t give you my phone number while at work,” Beatrice states again. Ava is about to accept her fate when Beatrice talks again. “But, I get off of work at 3,” she sounds nervous and, in an out-of-character way, she starts to ramble, “I mean, you don’t have to, I just thought it’d solve a problem, although it’s not the best option either, I’ll have to run to class at 3 and won’t have time to talk to you, assuming that’s what you want but if-”

“I’d love to run to class with you,” Ava thankfully interrupts her, making them both nervously chuckle. They look at each other in silence, letting their smiles talk for themselves when Ava’s phone starts to vibrate. “Shoot, I forgot about Mary. My friend, she’s waiting for me,” Ava doesn’t want to leave but knows Mary will kill her. She doesn’t know how, but she managed to get late for one hour. Beatrice seems disappointed but understands Ava has to go. “I’ll see you at three?” Ava asks, hoping Beatrice isn’t regretting her invitation.

“I’ll see you at 3.”

Written update:
”Lil, why are you so far away? We won’t be able to hear anything!” Camila complains.

“There’s nothing to hear. Beatrice is just making coffee, you’ll only hear the noise coming from the coffee machine,” Lilith says, not moving closer.

It’s mostly true, Beatrice is meticulously working on the coffee and the customer -Ava- is waiting for her order to be ready. But every few seconds Beatrice looks behind her to look at Ava, whose smile gets bigger every time Beatrice does that. Camila squeals every time it happens and Lilith is thankful it’s her day off or she would do something to push the situation further.

Once Beatrice finishes the coffee and puts the cookies and donut in a paper bag, she turns to Ava, who excitedly takes the items. She seems to be examining both cups, turning them around and intently looking at them. Her smile slowly drops and her brows furrow. Beatrice’s smile also seems to get smaller until it disappears.

“Lilith!” Camila chastises her.

“On it,” Lilith gets closer to the two girls.

Written update:
“Oh,” Ava sounds disappointed, and Beatrice rushes to fix whatever is wrong with her order.

“Is everything all right? Is there something wrong with the coffee?” Beatrice asks, unsure of what the problem is.

Ava pouts briefly before looking up at her and sighs, “Don’t worry about it, the coffee is fine. Thank you.”

“What’s wrong?” Beatrice asks again.

“It’s nothing, I just...” Ava takes a pause and studies Beatrice’s face before talking again. “I just thought you were going to give me your phone number, but you didn’t, and now I’m making a fool of myself,” Ava says without looking at her.

“Oh,” Beatrice seems taken by surprise, and her blush comes back at full force. “I-” she interrupts herself to take a deep breath. “You’re not making a fool of yourself. I-” Beatrice scratches the back of her neck and her blush deepens even more. “I’d love to give you my phone number,” she says, making Ava look back at her, “but we are not allowed to do so,” Beatrice says, unhappy that rule exists

Written update:

for the first time.

“Really?” Ava says, hopeful.

“Yes, I’d definitely do it.”

“Technically you could, you know? Nobody has to know,” Ava loudly whispers. Her smile is back and Beatrice mirrors it.

“Ah, you see, the manager is the one pointing her phone at us,” Beatrice tells her, pointing at Lilith. Ava turns her head and looks directly at Lilith, who lowers her phone slightly but still points the camera at them. She hears Camila trying to stifle a laugh.

Lilith clears her throat before making a vague gesture with her hand. “Just keep going,” is the first thing that comes out, and Camila’s laugh gets louder. She knows she’s blushing a little at being caught, but she’s not going to tell Camila about it.

Ava looks at the camera and waves her hand before she looks back at Beatrice. Lilith sees Camila waving back on her phone screen, and wonders why she agreed to do this. People usually are scared of her enough to not try her, but it seems Camila doesn’t feel that way.
