“One person is an autocratic president of the university for decades” certainly wasn’t a flawless system but it’s clear that “admins hop from job to job scaling the career ladder by filling their CV with ‘accomplishments’ that are expensive burdens to the schools they leave behind” is even worse.
The worst thing to happen to academia was the emergence of a nomadic administrative class like the one in corporations who just move from institution to institution setting fires and walking away.

Say what you will about the flaws of faculty governance, but at least they believe in the mission.

We keep adjusting our goalposts, trying to meet students where they're at--but for some, that place is a kind of non-place, where they don't complete any work or engage with the class, but still receive a high grade. Emails are ignored. They can't meet a deadline or keep an appointment.

The only way to argue against this is to imagine there are voters who will walk into a polling place one year from now with “the Democrats ended the shutdown last year and saved my Thanksgiving travel plans” at the forefront of their minds, which, I’m sorry, is not a real thing.
This is why you DON'T stop the shutdown. Clearly the voters know who's responsible for the shutdown and now it's gonna be even worse. Since the news isn't willing to be honest with Americans about what Trump was and is, this will have to do so they can get the message.

And we have now progressed from data analysis to policy recommendations.

I told her that we'd calculate the cash value of her candy haul, that I'd ask her to raid her piggy bank and donate 1/3 the candy cash value to a local food bank, and that I'd add on a 5X match.

DHS often say assaults against ICE officers have skyrocketed, but fails to provide real data to back that up.

I reviewed ICE's own Fallen Officers page. It tells a much different story, and shows that none of its officer have been killed by an immigrant since the agency was created.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what the hell the Senate Democrats are doing in Maine — the most important Senate race in the country. Their decision to back Janet Mills suggests they have learned no lessons from our loss in 2024.

The entire debate over whether or not protestors should use violence comes down to the fact that the definition of “violence” is applied unevenly to different groups on the basis of power.

If you’re attempting to upend the status quo, someone will always call something you did violent.

This is it. Trump is not a historical aberration; Trump is a reminder that after decades of comforting platitudes about the arc of history, something approaching actual democracy in this country is barely 50 years old.
For diff reasons, there are people who say if u look at the grand scheme of American history, Trumpism isn’t all that divergent from what America is, and yes exactly that’s why it’s so titanically bad

I assigned a thirty year old 552-page ethnography over the first four weeks of my online sociology of education course.
We’re two weeks in and over 1/3 of the class has already read the entire thing and are enthusiastically discussing it on the discussion boards.
Maybe the kids are alright?

I refuse to deplore "political violence" when it is made so explicit that it is the adjective, not the noun, that troubles the people so openly weeping and rending their garments right now. Either we all have a ticket in the Victim of Gun Violence Lotto or none of us do.

That Trump and Trumpism are fascist doesn’t explain the sheer vandalism of unleashing mass murdering mayhem via RFK to replace medical/scientific institutions of immense value and prestige with medieval peasant superstitions. That is a criminal madness facilitated by but above and beyond fascism.
