A thread on Australian languages from the Society for the Neurology of Language 2024 conference in Brisbane.
Across Australia, >330 distinct languages, more than 800 named language varieties (since naming also reflects culture and geography).

Currently 12-15 acquired by children as their first language; around 80 still spoken by elderly speakers.

First Nations language professionals from across Australia visited ANU last week to work on an ARC project about language ecologies.
