When I was at NIH and shutdowns loomed, it was discovered that the administration was planning to shut down PubMed. The head of NCBI called the powers that be and pointed out that this would threaten patient safety

Who knows what will happen now

Just in case, remember Euruope-PMC

The University of California, Berkeley, said on Friday that it provided the names of students, faculty and staff in cases of alleged antisemitism to the federal government, complying with the Trump administration’s investigation of universities it has accused of failing to protect Jewish students.

Very important issue to track.

Congress needs to assert its authority.
“Trump announced that he’ll unilaterally take back money already appropriated for foreign aid. This new so-called pocket rescission totals $4.9 billion.”

So. This is the big one.
If Vought floats this for foreign aid and it flies, science agencies are next.

I’ve had a lab for less than 3yrs. In that time the costs of many science reagents have grown faster than inflation. I ordered an antibody today that I paid $383 for in 2023- today with a good promotion, I paid $467. Tariffs on top of that.
Other easy examples:
Grids are up about 30%
Gloves up 25%

the crisis in which the University of Chicago is now engulfed -- one entirely of its own making, and which has led to the (hopefully temporary) suspension of admissions into numerous PhD programs in the humanities -- represents I think a seismic event in the history of American higher education

I wanted a light-bulb for a tail-light from Germany.

DHL tells me that they cannot carry it for me... because Trump tariffs.

This is all so stupid.

Business needs predictability, not chaos and capricious whims of a wannabe dictator. America, we are better than this. Why are you tolerating it?

ASM, ASBMB, ASCB & FASEB are deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court ruling allowing cancellation of $800M in NIH grants, threatening labs, jobs, and early-career scientists. Stable funding is vital for U.S. science.
