I deal in rare books, write & publish books, give talks, present shows. I make my living from words.

If you're rude or aggressive I'll block - I am curating, that's all. I block habitual shitposters because I hate lies. I do not engage with the far right.
This thread is utterly joyous.
THREAD. A collection of photographs of excellent sheep I have met on walks.

You will find the captions to each photo in the alt text.

So, today I discovered that Nigel Farage compared himself to a racist clown, and thought somehow that exonerated him.

Peace prizes will one day be as numerous as World Boxing title belts.

At some point in the future we will we need to get all the various prize winners together in a room to fight it out.

First one to die wins.
There he is folks. Proud recipient of the new FIFA Peace Prize. He couldn’t put that gold medal around his neck fast enough.

One of the things I find so odd about the Trump regime's idea that they are saving Western civilisation, is that Western civilisation had to save the world from people with very similar ideas to Trump only 80 years ago.

Another step on the way to reducing the population by killing off people who can't afford vaccines.
This is outrageous.

Today’s vote guts newborn hepatitis B protections, ignores decades of science, and puts politics over kids’ health.

I’m a mom, nurse, and former CDC officer — and we need leaders who defend public health, not dismantle it.

Tosca is a bloody great opera

The thing is, Nigel, Bernard Manning was a racist clown who didn't want to be PM.

So that's one thing you don't have in common.

I follow American politics closely because what goes on there infects Britain later - and because if I followed my own UK politics I would be driven to desperation in the same way US politics has done to so many Americans.

It's lived horror at one remove.

The second cousin of cultural collapse.

Christ, save me from people talking about sport. Moron on radio 4: "we dont want to lose this test match because then we'll be two nil down." And "we need to win this, not lose."

Holds head in hands. All sport interviews are the same.

Listening to a concert on radio 3, I thought the harmonies sounded like they were from the 1940s, in some way reminiscent of Britten's Peter Grimes.

In fact it's Tippet's A Child Of Our Time, which I now discover was written between 1939-41 and first performed in 1944.

Bang on. Pat on the back!

Rome didnt fall overnight into dictatorship. There were moments when it looked like democracy could be recovered, but eventually it finally succumbed tyranny. I hope the USA doesnt follow this track.

An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

This makes such a good point - as if the Trump regime is deliberately seeking to destroy loyalty among its troops.
Dems release a video reminding troops of their responsibility to disobey illegal orders.

They’re called seditionists.

WaPo breaks the news that Hegseth said to kill survivors of a boat strike.

WH: “It wasn’t him! It was Admiral Bradley!”

This is why you disobey illegal orders

Very very much enjoying reading a first edition of The Ticket That Exploded by William S Burroughs, and really impressed by the freedom of style and pure energy. There are so many boundaries being broken. I wish I'd read it years ago.

Getting very tired with the relentless misogyny-driven attacks on the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. "A woman, especially a left-ish one can't be trusted."

At a party on Saturday people were invited to make speeches for a departing Uni colleague.

One man asked ChatGPT how Foucault would describe him and read this "off the cuff" speech from his phone.

Everyone hung on "his" words, their eyes sparkling with how clever he was.

It was then that I left.

I feel like the words we say and write are central to who we are as individuals.

This is why I hate AI: because it hands our very selfhood to machines.

Film recommendation: Run, Lola, Run". A joyous bit of sliding-doors-style reality bending, but at a breathless sprint. Joyous!

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

What i find interesting about this extract is also relevant in the gun control debate. Pro-gun activists always say "we need a good guy with a gun to stop the bad guys" in this weird reductive way. Well, this shooter was one of the good guys.

People freak out and lose it. There are no good guys.
Right from Fox News — immigration is complicated no matter how reductive Trump — whose administration gave this man asylum to — tries to make it

As a bookseller, I repeatedly get people telling me they can't read, as if this is something that is normal.
I've never encountered more students who say they hate reading. Students who want to be teachers, writers, or both. I wonder if "hate" means "I have trouble reading," but I also talk with so many students who write in a genre but refuse to read in it. They can't see themselves in relation to others.

@tadethompson.bsky.social , I thought this might interest you.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
