Good afternoon #cookingsky, a request for help, please. I'm looking for a particular French fish soup I recall my late father bringing back from France in the 80s/very early 90s. It came in a packet, in dry form, with a smaller packet of croutons inside. These were so fierce with garlic my mother

Today is the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Mahna Mahna on Sesame Street. You’re familiar with it by now, of course, but... well, it never hurts to be reminded, does it?

As we move into “foreigners are cancelling Christmas in the name of political correctness” season it’s worth remember that Christmas was indeed once banned in England, by Christians and the man who enforced the ban has a statue in his honour outside the Houses of Parliament.

The greatest tragic love story ever told – but this time, Catherine tells it herself.

Added a translation. widget to the bottom left of my site. English and Irish (Gaeilge) supported. I hope it's not garbled nonsense. Could an Irish speaker have a look for me please?

Yes! This is so important! Machine Learning is doing wonderful things like mapping Martian craters and analyzing microbe genomes. LLMs are a very specific form & it’s them doing these huge amounts of harm. I also sometimes say “Gen AI”
when I mean both LLMs and art generators; I try to never say AI
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

How did we get to a point where the tools we rely on can't get the basics right because they're too busy digging in the shitty LLM goldmine?

It might be my own bias, but I genuinely wonder whether specifically marketing a zero AI tool might actually pull in more customers.

If AI can replace your staff, it can probably replace your product (and company) too.
One thing I'd caution against those who say "what my company does can be done entirely with AI... I don't need to pay actual people"...

If that's true, then what are you building that your customers can't just use ChatGPT to get?

I often see people saying we have to be careful about using the term evil. But fuck it, if you support a policy that brings potential harm to a vulnerable minority or just makes their everyday life extremely difficult I'm going to call it how I see it. It's YOU that needs to take a look at yourself.
