“We are all submitted to the reality principle - in other words to fantasy.” JL

Malcolm T. Liepke (painter)
It's taken me 2 MONTHS for me to shake this "good news" song out of my head, but it finally happened
So eventually I decide the only way through this is to listen to bear country 95.3 until I hear the song.

It only takes 30 minutes!

me: it's Shaboozey, "Good times"
gpt: you're right, it does resemble "Sweet Home Alabama"

I've used chat gpt enough to know when it's blowing smoke up my ass!

I fixed the silence with a song that, as I said to husband this morning "I'm embarrassed to like"

"you should be embarrassed" he joked while I played it for him - which interestingly, made me want to double down on my enjoyment, unashamed.

also, "you're right, this doesn't sound like you" he said
when my head is cluttered (as currently) I find it difficult to listen to music. as much as music can help with focus at times, other times I lose bandwidth to have anything else going on besides my thoughts & it’s weirdly quiet. try cooking dinner in silence. it feels psycho even if necessary.

Some knockout images from the Jenny Saville exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, easily one of my favourite shows this year. #Art #London #ArtSky

Another in the series: boys I met while traveling. This was #Thailand. Husband was sick that day and so I was going on the cave tour on my own.

[It bears mentioning early on that another day, when I was sick, husband went on the speedboat snorkeling trip on his own.]

Japan. I've never been to #tokyo, this was in #okinawa on a side trip with a girl friend. It was our last day before flying home. I'd gone out alone to spend the last of my yen, and I was at a snack shop looking at weird treats I could take home. a tell young man approached me,

a few weeks ago I reached out to someone I'd known long ago through work. I wrote to him "maybe you remember me" and he wrote back "of course I remember you" and I was reminded that we'd had the SAME conversation after we first met at a conference. I thought I'd written about it on the blog so I ..

also the other day, at work (do you ever have stories that seem poignant when they happen, but are hard to describe?)

Audio guy had come to solve a problem with power to one of our outputs. He and I were in the sweltering hot old meeting hall, lights off and sun filtering past drawn shades.

yesterday morning I swam across the lake (a popular pastime here) with my dog as companion. it was so fun & refreshing! on the way home I stopped at the market to throw away dog's poop bag.

later in the day a resident came by my office. "did I see you at the market with no clothes on?!" he asked.

I wrote a short post(s) here and then thought: I don't want this on the internet! The post(s) were fairly blasé and circumspect but still ... write, and delete.

This resonates; though I don't share all the author's observations (I'm not dating & I do see men at restaurants) I relate to the part that begins: "What I won't entertain is directionless orbiting." I've tried to reduce the time I spend on such para-social 'ships.

There’s a bunch I want to write.

And “write honestly” is one of my goals for this year.

But I haven’t made much progress.

Yet?

It’s almost 1/2way so I’m mentally checking in on my goals.

Still planning a Canadian road trip (yes, I gave in) but maybe for the fall because we are woefully unprepared.
À part ça, husband & I were planning to take the puppy on a Canadian road trip this summer but I'm suggesting we travel in Maine instead bc I'm worried about coming back in at the border. We're US citizens and husband thinks I'm overreacting, but I'm like "have you been reading the papers?"

One of the things I have always liked about Mikey is a clear eye about the mission/values of civil servants. That he is an independent thinker who has perspective on civil service more complex (& accurate) than the left's idealization of "tireless hero" vs the right's loathing of "swamp dweller"

correction - search and I find others ARE noticing too
They're the same principle: young tireless techno-skilled workers re-making the federal government. But such different vibes, at least from my liberal perspective! I haven't noticed anyone else making this parallel. I'm curious to explore if there's anything interesting to learn by compare/contrast.
