You can lead a man to Bluesky but you can't make him skeet. Sociology PhD student candidate studying health law, morality, & embodiment. 🏳️‍🌈💉he/him
After a semester of scaffolding, my theory undergrads can write a final paper on any topic of their choosing. Got sent a draft about the collective effervescence (& excessive sex distinction) surrounding Sydney Sweeney's anti-woke boobs.

Also to state the obvious, some people actually do change their sex, and this is a thing that doctors should know about their patients. Transphobes love to treat terminology like "sex assigned at birth's as a woke Orwellian language game rather than an adaptation to communicate material realities!
Honestly, do the Times opinion editors know that you can click on the blue words and read whatever they lead to?

Thesis: Black cats are difficult to photograph.
Antithesis: My black cat likes hanging out in my white bathtub.
Synthesis: I will photograph Karl while telling him how big and handsome he is getting every time he flops down in the tub. [idk how dialectics work don't @ me]

Little kernel of random Monday wisdom- being a people pleaser is often treated as a humble brag, but ACTUALLY trying to please everyone necessarily means betraying your own importantly held values. Best to please the people who matter to you, and to be choosey about those people.

my new hobby is disappointing and irritating all my constructivist friends by becoming increasingly critical-realism-pilled

In case it wasn't clear to anyone, I just want to point out as a trans guy who got all of the "scary" surgeries that shes writing abt- shes egregiously lying about the timeline. In no world does phalloplasty get greenlit in 90 days, or w/o therapy. Id been out for ~8yrs & the process still took 2yrs
Here we have a 53-year-old woman who is so consumed with hatred for her trans kid that she pretends to be nonbinary to show the world how quickly you can get hormones and surgery.

It takes 10 months just to get a referral.

I Pretended To Be ‘Nonbinary’ To Expose a Medical Scandal at Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser gender specialists were eager to approve hormones and surgeries, which would all be covered by insurance as “medically necessary.”

Proud of the undergrads in my theory class. I assigned them a tricky essay: read a journal article by a sociologist at our own institution & develop/nuance/critique its argument thru theoretical lenses from class. They did a great job identifying arguments & connecting to theory.

I submitted my application to teach a course called Morality and the Body as instructor of record this summer! Idk if my dept will choose me (I am not a very senior grad student lol) but I'm still proud of the course I designed. Also wrote my first teaching statement so yeehaw.

In the past 24 hours I completed my first journal submission (abstract only) and my first IRB submission! :)

While falling asleep the other night after a lot of sociology work, I looked at my cats next to me in bed, and my half-asleep brain briefly believed they understood my research. Does this ever happen to anyone else... 😭

Hello bsky sociologists! 👋 Grad student, new to bsky, heard this is where all the sociologists went. I'm seeking soc journals that publish low-N qualitative work (15 interview/focus group transcripts). The paper is on disability, embodiment, moral economy, and infrastructure. STS framing. Any leads?

After dropping out of my 45-credit epidemiology M.S., I learned that there is an unadvertised 30-credit version which is offered only internally to enrolled PhD students. Best of both worlds scenario: a public health degree AND the emotional satisfaction of having dropped it!

Radio host terrorizing me by playing some 2005 Postal Service hit and then wistfully remarking how it dropped "almost 20 years ago." Pretty sure 20 years ago was 1985, so jot that down.
