The latest episode of @ohgodwhatnow.bsky.social
irked me. I must be one of those lefties with extreme views on patriotism.

I'm no closer to resolving the question: What does it actually mean to be patriotic — and why should I be?

The wonderful @chrischirp.bsky.social articulated everything I have feared about Trump. I spent the whole of her section on @quietriotpod.bsky.social nodding my head. Brilliant episode. Thank you all.

1/ Look, the electorate is a horrible spaghetti of contradictory desires and wants. Too many people want to have their cake and eat it, too. That’s human beings.

You can not afford to be reactive. You cannot afford to be slow. You cannot afford a wait and see approach. You absolutely cannot mount a resistance with hand-written signs, color coding, and “debate".

There is no history of authoritarianism anywhere in the world that justifies that strategy.

It’ll take time.

It’ll be painful.

But Europe’s disentanglenent from the USA is no longer merely desirable. It is morally obligatory.

Europe must become a sanctuary to its friends, and a fortress to its enemies.

1/ 5 Reasons (Anglo-American) conservatism sucks
1. It Rejects Measurable Outcomes in Favor of Dogma.
• Con policies less economic mobility, more wealth inequality, worse healthcare, higher crime rates, poorer education.
• Epistemological sin: ignoring evidence to protect ideology.

There’s no other choice here.

Europe will have to arm up, form an alliance and turn its face towards the USA.

There’s no other option but capitulation to a maniac.

I mean, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, Me. Vice President.

The fucking gall, really.

The lesson of 1930s Germany is that it is easier for the majority to tolerate the whims of sociopaths, than to stand up for minorities. The majority will almost always choose comfort over confrontation. And once that happens they will always find reasons to stay silent in the face of atrocities.

Unless people in power start to actively call out and oppose the far right, and their outriders, and start seriously developing laws to suppress them, this country will sleepwalk into the same horror unfolding in the USA.

1/ Europe desperately needs to start closing down avenues of asymmetric warfare, particularly efforts at political destabilisation. Start by doing what they should have done a long time ago: exposing the far right for what it is, in loud, meaningful ways, and shutting down far right platforms.

It’s too late for the USA. Opposition will be eliminated from within the federal government, destroying institutional resistance. Hollowing out of voting will follow. Midterms that don’t match what they want will be ignored. Presidential elections will be Kremlinized. The USA will be Russia 2.0.

An important consequence of the English Civil War was the reservation by Parliament ever after to depose an unsuitable king. It was a right that American colonists invoked to justify the Revolutionary War, and arguably it’s a right that remains in the USA’s DNA to this day.

I hope the capitals of Europe are urgently conferring on how to protect the continent and its peoples from the FOTUS and his scum.

1/ Hitler & the Nazis weren’t clever or admirable people. They had, neither individually or corporately, any impressive or noteworthy thing to them. They were dim-witted, petty men with only one talent: opportunism. Everything else about them was a grim mash of cruelty, absurdity, and brittle ego

1/ The Holocaust didn’t start with gas chambers. The Nazis original plan was to deport the Jews. They turned to mass murder only when deportation became unworkable. Genocides start small. With little acts of bigotry, which gradually become state policy, which gradually turn into pogroms.

When is the UK government going to take the rise of the far right as a national security threat? When is it going to start making a serious effort to neutralise sources of radicalisation, and put in place a ubiquitous, robust counter radicalisation program?

I understand why Starmer is trying to walk the wire with Trump , but I just think it’s doomed to failure. At some point he will have to make a choice between fascist America and moral decency.

No, we don’t need a “strong leader who gets things done”.

What we need is for you to inform yourself about politics and world affairs, accept that pluralistic democracy requires time and care, and - most importantly - accept that you can’t always have things your own way.

“Well at least he gets things done.” - UK relative.

What has he got done that actually materially improves your life?

I am so sick of the moronic, ignorant, weak need people have for a “strong man”.
