I think sticks subconsciously resemble a primitive tool/weapon, sparking that old "this could be useful" instinct. As kids, we used sticks as swords, staffs, or pretend tools.
I used to play with sticks, rulers, cardboard tubes, curtain rods and brooms as a kid.
Yes, it's a thing! Sticks are cool!
